Hi @All,

Lately, I've been having this problem with my VW Passat 3B, manufactured in 1998:

If I'm currently driving and not braking, there are no problems.
- As soon as I drive on slightly rough roads, it sounds like something on the wheel is loose, and I can also notice a slight vibration in the steering.
- Even with gentle right-hand turns, there is also this vibration in the steering, as well as when braking lightly.
If I turn the steering wheel more or apply the brakes more firmly, the shaking subsides.

What could it be?

Best regards, Björn

Hi

If it's rattling, there's usually something loose.
I would first vigorously (!!) shake the front wheel up and down. This might allow you to provoke the sound and hear where it's coming from.

When two people are working together, one person can gently touch sensitive areas (like the wheel hub - control arm, etc.) and feel if the bearing is loose.

Similarly, proceed with the steering column joints: one turns slightly when turning the steering wheel, while the other feels loose.

If nothing else can be localized, then the bearing housings icon_sad.gif remain.

By the way, your question would be more appropriate in the vehicle forum icon_wink.gif
