aaargh...
'After a rain shower, there was 5 cm of water in the footwell on the driver's side. All other areas remained dry. According to the VW workshop, they would have had an idea if it had affected the passenger side... (namely, a leak in the area of the pollen filter cover). What is the best way to proceed to find the leak?'

a) Test the drainage in the battery compartment for proper flow (already checked, and it's okay).
b) It's better to go straight to the workshop; you can't figure it out yourself.
c) .....

Thank you in advance.
Hans.

Hi!

'On my Golf 3, it was the sunroof drain. It's located on both the driver's and passenger's sides, on the A-pillar between the door hinges.'
'It's a small rubber tube that comes out of there. Take a look and see if it's still protruding. It might also be completely blocked.'
If either of those things happens, all the water will flow into the footwell.
It could also be the pollen filter, and the smell might be coming into the passenger compartment through the ventilation shafts. But I don't think that's likely.

Best regards,
The Golfman.

Hmmm...
I don't have a garden (including a garden hose), nor do I have a sunroof. However, I thought I'd try filling the area under the battery with water using a watering can to see if the drain might be blocked. --- No luck, the water drains perfectly and doesn't even reach the pollen filter.
I guess I'll wait for the next rain.

'Still, thank you for the tips.'
Hans.

Hi,

Have you ever looked at the door? Specifically, I'm talking about the insulation inside the door. If that's no longer intact, water will leak into the footwell.
Grab your watering can again, get in the car, and have someone pour 10 liters of water onto the rubber strip between the window and the door frame.

Have fun!

Andy.

Hello porkpie,

I once had a "water leak" issue with a Golf 2 – I almost went crazy trying to find the cause.

The car was always parked at an angle, meaning the passenger side was about 30cm higher than the driver's side, and the film that's located between the interior trim and the metal body in the G2 model was damaged.

"Water was running down from the side windows into the door, and with a certain 'angle' of the door, it would flow over the sill and into the passenger footwell."

The best thing to do is get in the car and let the air conditioning "work its magic."

Good luck!

HI!

Has your windshield been replaced recently?
Take a watering can and check it, make sure it doesn't drip onto the window!

Best regards, Marko.

My friend had the same problem recently... you really rack your brain trying to figure it out... in the end, it turned out to be coming from the top of the windshield... a little bit of silicone applied, and that was it!

You probably have to thoroughly investigate everything that might be relevant, and then you also need a bit of luck to spot even the smallest clue somewhere.
However, it should be possible with a water level of 5 cm, which is quite a bit.

Hi,

In my case, water also started leaking through the windshield during the first heavy rain, and this was with a mileage of 300km icon_eek.gif (a 1996 Golf 3). The entire footwell was wet, and the technicians at the dealership had to replace everything. It's quite annoying when it happens to a new car.

Best regards,
René K.
