Hello everyone,
In the autumn, my Golf III TDI, with 200,000 km on the odometer, started making a loud noise on the front wheels. The squealing noise disappeared when I braked.
Okay, I've ordered the wheel bearings, and the shock absorbers were already due for replacement, plus the front axle was disassembled. New wheel bearings have been installed - incidentally, they were removed using a 16mm threaded rod, a very strong washer on the outside, and a U-shaped washer that had been properly ground/polished/cut, almost as large as the bearing itself, so the wheel bearing is now loose, and the rest can be easily removed. Pulling also.
Just got back from the TÜV - the steering has no play - and the noise is gone again, just like when it was making noise while braking.
Does anyone have anything else to add?
Could it be that the left brake cylinder is possibly being over-relieved, and the pad is 'floating'?
I noticed that the tread on the right side is a bit more worn.
Thank you.
Stefan Krissel
