Gear Shift: Learn Neutral Position Calibration

The start-stop system is not working.

I initially deleted the error.
The transmission was replaced a few years ago (by an external company/mechanic).
Since I wasn't sure if the zero position was correctly aligned with the transmission and sensor, I wanted to recalibrate the sensor.

I tried to recalibrate the sensor in the VCDS menu under "Basic Settings."
I'm not sure if that worked the way it was supposed to.
First of all, the initial setup process only takes fractions of a second. Also, the new learned values don't seem reasonable to me.

After that, the error message reappears even when he tries to reactivate the start-stop function (with the brake firmly pressed and the transmission in neutral).

However, the sensor provides voltage readings that seem reasonable to me when I display them as raw measurement values, depending on its orientation.

Do you mean "external" as in not from Volkswagen? Why was the transmission replaced? Is it the same GKB (transmission code) as the original one? What is the software version? Are there any other error codes present?

To help me assist you better, it would be helpful if you could provide a complete scan. (Including any relevant financial information would also be appreciated.)

Unfortunately, I can't identify which type of transmission is installed in your vehicle. Since the adjustments vary depending on the specific transmission model, I cannot provide a definitive answer to your question.

You are describing a recent gearbox change!

For a 09G transmission, for example, after replacing the multifunction switch, it must be adjusted using the special tool T10173. Only then can adjustments be made via VCDS.

Regarding the software version, I can't provide any further information at this time other than what is stated here. Where can I find the requested version information?

The transmission was replaced by an independent workshop because the clutch was defective (the rivets were broken), and this damage gradually led to the transmission failing. Unfortunately, I can't determine whether the sender unit is the old one.
It's a manual 6-speed transmission (TDI with 103 kW).
License plate prefix: LNZ.


Here is the complete first entry.
After clearing the codes, all errors initially disappeared. However, the engine error reappeared, along with the error in address 46 (alarm horn).

Is the repair history traceable? Since when have these errors existed? There are other implausible errors recorded. What is the condition of the battery? I would like to examine the power supply more closely.

The basic setting or the gear lever position for neutral is adjusted mechanically.

For this, you will need the special tool T10027A or a comparable mandrel.

The G701 sensor (part number 02T 906 207 D) is located directly on the transmission, secured with an M6 screw, and costs approximately 30 euros.

I only see sporadic errors in your error logs, and occasionally a short circuit to the positive voltage here and there. And you mentioned that the start/stop function is not working.

"When reading the error memory, the starting voltage was only 12.4 volts!! (60-70% state of charge). Below 70%, irreversible sulfation begins."

The vehicle's inability to activate the start/stop function can have several reasons besides being in neutral – one common cause is a poorly charged or defective battery. Another possibility is error messages stored in the engine control unit.


I would check the battery/charge as mentioned by Andy, and additionally inspect/verschandeln the connector at the neutral switch and potentially replace it if necessary.

Short circuits to the positive terminal can be caused by corroded fuses, poor connections, broken cables, or a stuck relay (type 30).

Does the start/stop function work intermittently or not at all?

You could proceed as follows:

Clear errors in the engine control unit and ensure operating conditions for start/stop functionality (operating temperatures, etc.).

Does the start/stop function work at least temporarily, until the error (neutral position sensor fault) reappears? The problem likely lies with the neutral position sensor.

Does the start/stop function also fail even when the error memory is cleared and empty? It's important to first rule out the numerous other reasons why the start/stop system might be disabled. Primarily, check the battery and generator.

You can read the values for the starter battery from the control unit. You should check this carefully, as you need an AGM battery (68 Ah / 380 A), and those are not exactly cheap.

How old is the battery? 12.4 volts is quite low for an AGM battery. In my experience, anything below 12.6 volts will definitely prevent the start/stop system from working (and is often a sign of a defective battery).

When charging the battery, please use a charger suitable for AGM batteries.

The causes of almost all other errors (e.g., related to the speaker) have already been fixed. These are no longer appearing in the log. Only the alarm horn (IRÜ) and the aforementioned sensor remain.


Unfortunately, the error still reappears.
There must be something wrong with the sensor or the wiring.
Unfortunately, I can't check the connector today because the vehicle was only here briefly. Perhaps the search will resume in a few weeks.

The "Start/Stop" function is permanently malfunctioning and throws an error as soon as the first opportunity for activation arises.

The battery is definitely a factor; it's not new anymore.
However, the vehicle starts reliably well, even this winter with its very low temperatures, without any problems.

That would be my initial approach. If the battery management system detects, based on various parameters, that the battery is falling below certain thresholds, the start-stop function will be deactivated.

You might have the option of temporarily using a known good replacement battery as a first test, before buying a new battery based on suspicion.
