Hello everyone,

I have a Golf 5, and the last thing I did was replace the battery. Now, the steering wheel symbol and the ESP symbol are illuminated in yellow on the dashboard. I've tried to reset it using VCDS, following various guides from other users, but I haven't been able to get it to work. I've also tried the Rosstech guide. Can someone please help me?

Thank you in advance.

Can you tell us what you have already tried?

Can you provide us with your car's diagnostic scan data?

Have you ever driven longer distances than just 5-10 meters?

In my hazy recollection, single-digit meters don't seem sufficient.

Regards,
Guste.

Hello,

Generally, after replacing the battery in a Volkswagen Golf 5, a diagnostic tool is not necessarily required to reset the ESP warning light.

Here, simply calibrating the limit switches and running a short distance is sufficient.

Have you tried this, or did you immediately start using the testing tool?

As Andreas already mentioned, a complete car scan would be helpful now.

Have you done anything else to the vehicle, or just disconnected/reconnected the battery?

Has the vehicle been modified?

Possibly. Is a Golf 6 steering wheel installed?

Greetings.

I would have started by simply driving for 1 kilometer and trying out a few different scenarios, rather than messing around with the control units. Left, right, brakes with ABS activation, etc.
If everything is still glowing afterward, I would have investigated the reason.

"Simply disconnecting the battery" should not cause any issues.

I have deleted your collection of tutorials that didn't work, as such posts cause more problems than they solve. Exactly what one should not do is simply follow random instructions and tinker with control units without knowing what one is doing! icon_idea.gif
Where is your car scan?

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi.

Yesterday, a friend came by with a Golf 5 Variant, and he's having the same problem: the steering angle sensor cannot be initialized.

I need to access the steering assist control unit through the installed version, checking things like access permissions, basic settings, and channel zero calibration. I can get to that point, but the "Start" button isn't activated, so I can't click it.

There wasn't time for a longer story yesterday.

I can only provide the Autoscan feature once I've had the car for a longer period and have the necessary time to do it properly. However, it's possible I've forgotten something or am simply not smart enough to handle it.

Thank you.

I just experienced this recently when I installed an AHK (presumably a type of electronic component) on a 2007 model.

Error message G81, steering angle sensor.
- Steering adjustments to both sides (while the engine is running) had no effect.
-Driven for a short distance, approximately 20 meters, and the error disappeared icon_smile_thumb_up.gif.

Thanks for the feedback, but unfortunately, nothing here seems to help. There's a different issue at play. I'll be running an Autoscan soon, and I'll create a new thread about this topic.
