Okay, I've already found quite a bit of information on this, but I still need your advice.
Okay, I want to install a FIS combination meter.
I would like to know the following:
1.) VGA COM: Which version do I need to re-code the W-key/combination?
2.) Since I don't have a CAN bus yet... damn. 10/6/99. How do I get a signal? Which pin is it on my Audi with the VIN WAUZZZ8DZXA2988185?
Overall, it's not that expensive.
200 euros for the VGA COM.
60 for a tachometer unit.
100 Euros for the GRA (graphics card adapter) including the wiring harness.
20 levers...
20 for parts.
I might be able to use the VGA port for other things later on...
I want to install the GRA and the FIS at the same time... just disassemble everything once and that's it.
So, how do I achieve that? What is your experience?
Here are the installation instructions...

It's even cheaper than I thought.
128 euro speedometer with FGSTN!!!!!
35 Euro lever with GRA and FIS.
Everything's available at the auto parts recycler!
Okay, then you'll also need a few small parts and an authorized dealer who can program the ignition keys.
Therefore, you can get both for under 300 euros.
I'll try everything out and write a thread about it, if the administrators allow it.

Hi,
You can immediately invest the money you saved with Audi . When I replaced the instrument cluster with a FIS, I had to pay 48 euros to have the WFS adjusted. Unfortunately, you can no longer do this yourself, as the unlocking process is done online, which means that the dealer no longer sees the login code either.
Replacing the steering column switches also costs a bit. As far as I know, someone paid 95 euros for it. When I had my leather steering wheel installed at Audi, that alone cost 40 euros. For various reasons that have been discussed many times, I would also advise against trying to do it yourself.
For the GRA (presumably a specific feature or system), you still need the cable from the switch to the engine control unit. Connecting it might be a bit fiddly, but it shouldn't be a problem. In my opinion, the results are definitely worth it. I actually only retrofitted the FIS (likely a display system) because I wanted to have the arrow display from the Navi+ (also retrofitted) in the instrument cluster.
Just out of curiosity, what is the part number for your new station wagon? (If I remember correctly, the vehicle's chassis number starts with an 'A4').
Best regards,
Mike.

1.) You can definitely do all of that yourself! There are people out there who completely disassemble their entire engine or the ESP system... compared to that, this is just child's play...!!!
Audi only wanted 120 euros for the GRA installation. For the unlocking (reprogramming the key), they are now only calculating the time required, with an hourly rate of 65 euros.
2.) Please take a look at my new summary. Everything is simpler than it seems, and I also have the original electrical plans, so what could possibly go wrong?
3.) Mine is an A4 B5 67/99 without CAN bus, so it has an older navigation system with a 3-line bus... see below for the rest!!!
Previously, these were free to use without requiring activation for FIS and GRA.
Hello. 128 euros.
Steering column combination with FIS and GRA: 32 euros.
Small parts: 30 euros.
Activation for audio dealer/key reprogramming: approximately 35 euros.
Coming in under 250 euros for both...!
@ ALL:
Okay, I've put together an installation guide for the GRA FIS, compiled from various forums, so that people don't have to spend hours searching!
Please correct the following text from German to English. Provide only the translation, no explanations.
NEVER buy a tachograph from eBay without a PIN or FGSTN!
YOU ARE COMPLETELY USELESS BECAUSE AUDI DEALERS CANNOT ACTIVATE THEM!
You can find it at the junkyard for €128, including invoice and VAT! Activation is no problem.
I don't know if there's any real interest here, but I'm going to post my collected works.
1. http://www.audi4ever.at/faq/pdf/fis_nachruesten.pdf
2. http://navi-forum.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=10646 WITHOUT CAN -> WITH CAN
IMPORTANT: MY INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR VEHICLES WITHOUT CAN BUS, MANUFACTURED BEFORE 6/99, AND REQUIRE A JUMP CODE.
Appropriate speedometers would be: Diesel:
8D0 919 880 M.
8D0 919 881 A
8D0 919 880MX
8D0 919 881L
Gasoline engines:
8D0919 880 N
8D0919 880 E
If you're considering installing an S4/RS4 speedometer in your car, please reconsider. It will only cause endless problems. Sometimes, it simply won't work!
Conversion from CAN-based to non-CAN-based system:
'You can open the 10-pin connector, remove all the spring contact cables, and only connect the relevant pins to a new 20-pin connector housing with the part number 4A0 972 883 B.'
Add the 20-pin connector for FIS functions, and run the wiring to the right-hand steering column stalk with the FIS switch.
Until 6/99, 20 times red.
1 – Consumption signal – yellow.
2 - Not verified.
3 - Clutch pedal switch - brown/yellow.
4 - Not verified.
5 - Outside temperature - brown/yellow.
6 - Selector lever indicator - black/brown.
7 – not applicable.
8 - not applicable.
9 - Wash water - blue/red.
10 - Hydraulic pressure (not available!!)
11 – FIS – Reset – gray.
12 - Clock - Signal for radio - gray/red.
13 - Data - Signal for radio - red/brown.
14 – FIS left – blue.
15 - Enable - Radio signal - red/yellow.
16 - Rear turn signal/brake light (bulb check) / gray/purple.
17 - Undervoltage protection relay (not activated !!).
18 – FIS right – green.
19 - Brake light - red, (third brake light)
20 - not documented.
Connect the motor control unit (STG) wiring after installation, using a 10-pin connector. Connect brown wire to pin 3 in the E-box, water tank compartment. Wire color: yellow.
2 to 8 pins to 20-pin connector.
9. Either replace the windshield washer reservoir with a new one that includes a sensor, or connect the error suppression contact to ground.
Release 10.
11, 14, 18 to the right steering column lever with FIS switch.
12, 13, 15, tune to the radio.
Connect pin 16 to ground for error suppression.
Release 17.
Convert a 10-pin connector to a 20-pin connector.
Release 20.
Isolate and store any leftover cables. In the 10-pin connector, there are multiple ground wires.
To use the FIS (Facility Information System) functions, the right-hand stalk lever must be replaced. Use the FIS stalk lever with the RESET button, part number 4B0 953 503 G for sedan, and 4B0 953 503 H for Avant.
Flat connector housing for wiper lever with FIS functions, 6 pins, part number 893 971 636.
Contact pins for flat connector housings, 6-pin, part number 000 979 133, and compatible variants.
Connect the 20 red wires to terminals 11, 14, and 18.
Disconnect the battery and wait for half an hour; that's a better approach...
To remove the airbag located behind the steering wheel, loosen two Torx 30 screws.
(Not everyone has a 30mm Torx key and a 12mm internal wrench, so borrow them beforehand...)
Disconnect the 2-pin connector on the airbag and then place it with the cap facing upwards.
Disconnect the connector for the horn/airbag from the retaining ring.
Loosen the steering wheel using a wrench for the 12-tooth internal spline screw and remove the steering wheel.
Remove the cover plate in front of the instrument cluster; it is only clipped in, not screwed.
Remove the top part of the column cover by loosening the two long screws from underneath the bottom part.
To detach the lower part of the column cover, unscrew one Torx 12 screw from the bottom and two small Phillips head screws from the front.
5-pin connector, yellow, rear side. Clip off the retaining ring on the back.
Remove the retaining ring with the coiled spring by releasing the three locking tabs.
Loosen the Allen screw on the steering column combination, detach the linkage, replace the right-hand switch by unclipping it. Connect the wiring harness and reassemble everything neatly.
Install the airbag, ensuring that the Torx screws are tightened securely by hand.
'Insert the ignition key into the steering wheel lock and turn the ignition on, then connect the battery!'
From Klaus: http://www.audi4ever.at/ Forum.
TO GRA:
Installation:
The best way to get the entire steering column assembly is to buy it from a scrap dealer for 36 euros! That way, you only have to disassemble the handlebar once, and you only have to remove the airbag once.
Then, connect the wires according to the wiring diagram and connect them to the electrical box.
'The trim and other components are already removed due to the FIS (instrument cluster) conversion. You also need to access the E-box (electronic control unit) for the consumption signals...'
The activation process is completed at the Audi dealership!

I'd be interested to know why Audi dealerships shouldn't be able to unlock speedometers purchased on eBay.

Because you need the FGSTN from the OLD car. Otherwise, it won't work, or they won't do it!
Activation can now only be done online, and the data will be verified there.
'This happened to me too, and it's also mentioned in all the common forum threads about this issue.'
I haven't experienced any problems; I have the new combination instrument cluster (with FIS) and everything is working perfectly!
