Hi!

I have a 1Y Passat, manufactured in 1990.
And I'd like to get your opinions on retrofitting a turbocharger.
The car has an original mileage of 200,000 km and is driven every day.
What some people might call a 'scarecrow' only has 50 kW of power!
Has anyone ever done a conversion like this before?
I am grateful for any helpful answers.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'See you, Jens'

Hello,
Is it still 'worth it' to invest 'something' there?
Best regards,
Günther.

What is a 1Y engine?
Probably not a TDI or something similar.

I personally think it's a waste of time and money to modify a car's engine.
Can you actually do those kinds of tasks yourself?

Sure, here's the translation:

"ps."
It's better to buy a sensible TDI right away.
I don't think you can do anything meaningful with the engine.

Enjoy your meal!

For information:
The 1Y is an AAZ engine without a turbocharger, meaning it has a swirl chamber with mechanical injection. Injection.

If he has oil spray nozzles for the pistons, then there's nothing against it, but I can't recall the details.
He should be able to find out if they have any at the VW parts counter. I might have some at home.
Also, here's the translation:

"Also, documents related to that as well."

It's best to remove the parts for the retrofit from a scrapped vehicle.
You might need a turbocharger, exhaust manifold, and exhaust pipe, possibly. Intake manifold, air filter + hoses.
Oil supply and return lines to the turbocharger.
and you have to drill a hole for the oil return line into the block, or use the oil pan from the 1.6-liter engine.
TD has a connection for that.

Whether this is worthwhile for you, or whether a used AAZ (condition?) would be cheaper.
I can't tell you for sure, but getting it inspected at TÜV might be easier with an AAZ engine.
You can register it as a self-built turbocharger; just ask several examiners.

If you still have the "paper" type ZKD (cylinder head gasket), you should replace it with the metal type before the engine rebuild.
The timing belt in the AAZ engine typically needs to be replaced around 250,000 kilometers, depending on driving style.

With an oil cooler and appropriately adjusted components, the engine can achieve up to 130 horsepower under certain conditions.
Assuming you drive responsibly, the lifespan should not be overly limited.

Hi,
'Some time ago, I also looked into the conversion from a 1Y engine to an AAZ engine. I read in a repair manual that the engines differ in the width of the lower connecting rod bearings (the 1Y has narrower ones), as well as in the length of the connecting rods and, accordingly, the pistons.' Unfortunately, the inspection at the actual location could not take place because the bus that was supposed to be modified had already been sold.
