On my 2000 Bora Variant, I had a problem where an error message appeared in the airbag system. I then used the VAG COM to read out the error codes, and the following errors were displayed: "Passenger and driver seat airbag resistance too large."
I'll have VW take a look. Diagnosis: both airbags are defective. Repair costs approximately 2000 euros. I found this a bit strange, as both airbags should be defective at the same time, and I did some research on the topic. I got the repair guide and the VW airbag test device from a friend. The test device simulates the airbag by using a 3-ohm resistor connected to the control unit. Even with the test device, the value was still displayed as too high on both sides !! Therefore, the airbags themselves could not be the cause of the error. Now, only the control unit or the wiring could be the problem. There is a switch on the airbag tester that shorts the wires. In the measurement block, the text "too small" should be displayed. This was not the case for me. The control unit recognized the value as correct. The connectors appeared to be in good condition at first glance, and no loose connection could be detected. However, only by moving the connection cables very strongly could a loose connection be seen. I then disconnected one of the connectors. This allowed us to see that a layer of oxidation had formed around the connection cable and the contact pin, which created a contact resistance. Subsequently, I cut off all the connectors and connected the wires directly using waterproof crimp terminals. And lo and behold, both errors were fixed.
Then I went to the VW workshop again and showed them the connectors, and they said to me: "There seem to be problems with the connectors, and they would also solder them!" 2000 euros for 6 connectors -> not bad, a good profit. Then, my workshop supervisor and I parted ways unpleasantly when he said that I should pay for the estimate!
Thank you to everyone who participates in these forums and shares their experiences!!!!
Best regards,
Jörg
