A comparison of the Ross-Tech diagnostic interfaces HEX-V2 and HEX-NET, with an explanation of the VIN/FIN limitations.

Firstly: Both interfaces can offer the same functionalities as the VCDS program.

Whether it's HEX-V2 or HEX-NET, the VCDS diagnostic software is the same. You can read fault codes, log measuring values, program control units, reset service intervals, and perform actuator tests – all with both devices. The difference lies in the hardware, the speed, and the additional features.

HEX-V2: The proven entry-level option

The HEX-V2 is connected to a Windows laptop via USB. It is the direct successor to the long-proven HEX-USB+CAN and covers all VAG models, including new vehicles from the 2018 model year onwards.

Three license options are available.

3 FIN (Hobby) – For the private individual who wants to fully diagnose one to three of their own vehicles. Service functions such as coding and service resets are limited to three vehicle identification numbers (VINs). However, reading and clearing fault codes can be done on an unlimited number of vehicles. A post-purchase upgrade is possible at any time.

10 FIN (Advanced) – For the mechanic with multiple vehicles or for a side business. Ten vehicles can be fully managed. Also upgradeable to unlimited.

Unlimited FIN (Professional) – For workshops and frequent users. No limit on the number of vehicles. Including SFD activation (beta, 1 year) for vehicles equipped with SFD.

HEX-NET: The professional solution with WLAN/WIFI

The HEX-NET is Ross-Tech's top-of-the-line model. It offers everything that the HEX-V2 can do – plus Wi-Fi and VCDS-Mobile.

With VCDS-Mobile, you can use the interface wirelessly with your smartphone or tablet. Are you standing next to your vehicle and just want to quickly check the error memory? Take out your smartphone, connect to Wi-Fi, and start the diagnosis. No laptop required.

For a complete diagnosis on your PC/laptop, VCDS (a Windows program) will continue to be used via USB or Wi-Fi. The HEX-NET is currently the fastest interface from Ross-Tech, and it saves money in a workshop environment.

We exclusively sell the HEX-NET in the unlimited professional version (no VIN restrictions).

Which interface for whom?

For hobby mechanics with 1-3 vehicles:
HEX-V2 with 3 FIN. Most affordable entry point, full diagnostics for your own vehicles, and always upgradeable.

For the ambitious DIY enthusiast: HEX-V2 with 10 fins. If you frequently help friends and family, or if you manage different types of vehicles.

For the independent workshop: HEX-NET with unlimited access. Fastest interface, Wi-Fi for flexible use, VCDS-Mobile for quick checks without a laptop. The higher investment pays for itself through time savings.

For the automotive diagnostics service provider (mobile): HEX-NET with unlimited usage. Work on the customer's vehicle using a tablet; no laptop setup is required. Unbeatable for on-site diagnostic work.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

What does FIN limitation mean exactly?

FIN = Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Whenever you perform a coding, adaptation, or service reset on a vehicle, the VIN is stored in the interface. You can then fully access and modify these vehicles repeatedly. Reading and clearing error codes is possible on an unlimited number of vehicles, even with the 3-FIN version.
Discussion about the FIN limit:

Can I upgrade a VCDS interface retroactively?
Yes. An upgrade from 3 to 10 FINs or from 3/10 to unlimited is possible online. You purchase an upgrade license, and the
and the additional FINs will be activated on your interface within 24 hours. You don't need to submit the interface.

Does VCDS work on all VAG vehicles?
VCDS supports Audi, Bentley, Cupra, Lamborghini, Seat, Skoda, and Volkswagen – all models with an OBD2 interface. This includes vehicles from approximately 1995 (K-Line) up to the latest models with CAN-Bus and UDS protocol. Even the MAN TGE, starting in 2025.

Do I need an expensive laptop?
No. VCDS runs on Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11, even on inexpensive used laptops. It also supports Windows-ARM tablets (like the Surface Pro). For mobile diagnostics with HEX-NET, a smartphone or tablet with a browser is sufficient.

What is KDataScope and KPower – do I need it?
KDataScope and KPower are only included in the package for diesel mechanics. KDataScope analyzes diagnostic logs and displays measurement values graphically. KPower measures engine power directly through speed measurement – providing useful results without an expensive dynamometer. Both tools are included with every VCDS purchase.

Is the SFD subscription important?
SFD (Service Functionality Disablement) is a security mechanism in newer VAG (Volkswagen Group) control units. Without SFD deactivation, many coding and adaptation processes are blocked on current vehicles. The unlimited HEX-V2 version and the HEX-NET version include a 1-year SFD subscription. Currently, SFD is not included in the 3-FIN and 10-FIN versions.

Conclusion: Which VCDS should you buy?

If you only manage your own vehicles, the HEX-V2 3 FIN is the best option. The savings compared to the HEX-NET are significant, and the functions are identical in everyday use.

Anyone who works in a workshop or offers mobile diagnostic services should consider using HEX-NET. Wi-Fi saves time every day. Anyone who wants to perform diagnostics on their vehicle while on the go using their smartphone can do so with VCDS-Mobile and the HEX-NET.

The unlimited HEX-V2 version is the compromise: it offers full professional functionality, but without Wi-Fi mobility. Ideal for workshops with a diagnostic workstation.
