Hi! I'm starting to get really frustrated with my golf game... Maybe you can give me a tip about what might be causing it?

Over the past 4 months, my Golf IV (TDI with pump injectors, manufactured in March 2001) has been in the workshop a total of 6 times.

The whole trouble started when the workshop (located in the Stuttgart area; those who have experienced similar issues can contact us via email icon_smile.gif) attempted to replace the timing belt and tensioner pulley.

After paying a service bill of over €800 and driving away from the garage, I immediately noticed loud thumping and grinding noises (see also my previous post here).

The next day, I went back. The statement was: 'This is normal and will go away with time. Just drive a few kilometers. Those other noises are just normal 'diesel sounds'.'

After several thousand kilometers, the noise got louder. Another mechanic said: 'That's normal. The tensioner pulley is very tight on these TDI PD engines; the timing belt needs to wear in.'

A thousand kilometers later: 'That could be a tension element. Let's take a look.' So, we spent a full day at the workshop. Picked it up, but nothing had changed.

So, I went back again. This time, they expressed concern and asked me to speak with the service manager. He promised things would improve, but he sent me away for now because there were no available appointments.

JIn any case, I had to pay.

I drove out of the yard, and after barely 100 meters, there was a loud screeching and scraping sound when turning into the next curve while simultaneously accelerating. The noise was extremely loud, and it definitely wasn't present before visiting the workshop! I had to turn back. I waited for over half an hour until the service manager finally agreed to talk to me (another technician refused, saying it was a matter for the boss and should remain that way).
He performed a remote diagnosis, essentially saying that I was probably hearing normal sounds because I was upset. I almost had to force him to listen to the car. He eventually agreed, but declined to do a test drive. His diagnosis, even though the noise isn't audible when the car is stationary: The power steering will likely fail soon, but this happens more often and has nothing to do with the attempts to replace the timing belt.

AbSurely this can't be the right place, or can it?

Long story short... Has anyone had similar experiences after a timing belt replacement?

My non-expert opinion suggests that the power steering pump is located right next to the timing belt in the engine compartment. Also, the V-belt that drives it must be removed as well. Could this be the reason?

I'm grateful for any advice. I think the workshop is ripping me off...

Cheers,
Tom.

Hello Tom!
DThe extra work isn't really worth mentioning; for most cars, it takes no more than a maximum of half an hour.

Also wĂ€ren 2 Möglichkeiten, die mir einfallen wĂŒrden. Wenn yes :arrow:and then take it to the workshop and complain loudly.

What else just occurred to me... are all the fairings in the right-hand wheel well properly mounted? Is anything rubbing against either the wheel or the crankset?

Best regards,

Dominique.
