Oh, by the way, when I mentioned the 'sound,' I wasn't talking about the rattling noise, but rather the sound of the exhaust system, etc.
It's probably going to be amazing with a 1.8T engine.
Yesterday, a friend came by in a borrowed Passat VR6. It only had a K&N sports air filter and the original VW exhaust system.
The sound became really awesome in the higher RPM range.
So, what I mean is, can you really get a 'souund' out of a TDI engine, or am I mistaken?
'Are there many performance exhaust systems available for TDIs, or are there hardly any at all?'

12-06-2002, 14:46 Subject: Fuel Consumption 1.8T Engine |
Quote |

Hi,
Okay, my best fuel consumption was achieved while using a roof box and driving at 80 km/h on the highway.
3.2 liters per 100 kilometers. The highest it reached was 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers.
Both statements originate from the MFA (presumably referring to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs).
Actually, I've rarely double-checked things so far.
With a full tank, the maximum distance you could travel was approximately 1200 kilometers.
The minimum range with one tank was approximately 800 kilometers.
(High top speed and city driving).
Greetings,
Thomas. -----------------------------------------------------

The MFA (Multifunction Display) with the Box system displays a value that is inherently too low, so it's not a truly accurate reading. Furthermore, especially in urban driving conditions at standstill, there are additional errors that can affect the average by up to 0.3 liters per 100 km. However, on the highway during continuous driving without stops, it displays the value very accurately.
I arrived at these conclusions after driving 9000 km and calculating the fuel consumption for each fill-up. Most of the time, the error was around 0.2 liters, which is how much the MFA underestimated the average consumption. However, when driving without stopping, the value was exact, so my MFA should be accurate at least for the instantaneous fuel consumption, which settles at just under 4 liters at a constant speed of 80 km/h. At 120 km/h, it's slightly below 6 liters, and 5.5 liters is usually quite close. At a speedometer reading of 140 km/h, the consumption is around 6.6 to 6.8 liters, and in the city, it's quite variable. If you drive very economically, you can achieve 5 liters per 100 km, but if you don't, it easily goes up to 6 or more.
My ASV engine consumes a maximum of about 12 liters, which is at full throttle in 5th gear on the highway at approximately 200 km/h according to the speedometer, or roughly 190 km/h in reality.
"This is all without any chips or modules, so it's the original version."
Here's the translation:
"Regarding your choice... the 1.8T engine consumes quite a bit of fuel; even with relatively mild driving, you can easily see well over 20 liters displayed on the MFA (Multi Function Display). When accelerating hard in second gear, my TDI shows a maximum of 35 liters, while my parents' 1.8T can easily reach 70 or more. If you enjoy accelerating quickly from very low RPMs, I would always recommend the TDI."

Okay, and do you know how a chip or a device affects consumption?
On various tuner websites, consumption is decreasing by up to 0.5 liters!

I don't have any personal experience to share on this topic, but the reports in this forum seem to vary between half a liter more and half a liter less.
My guess is that, with the same driving style, it would probably result in "about half a liter less" fuel consumption, because you can shift gears earlier due to the increased torque. However, if you modify the car (tune it), you'll likely use that extra power, which could change your driving style and potentially lead to the same or even higher fuel consumption, depending on the person.
The most important factor in controlling fuel consumption is actually the right foot. On my way to work (10 kilometers through Berlin city traffic), under otherwise identical conditions, I can achieve a fuel consumption of either 5.3 liters or 6.5 liters.

Another question about the TDI.
Is it possible to achieve a good sound when accelerating with a TDI engine?
For a 1.8T engine, I'm sure that just installing a K6N chip, a downpipe, and a good exhaust system will significantly improve the sound.
Is it even possible to get a good sound from a TDI engine?

I have a really good sound system in my TDI... just put in a nice CD, turn it up a little, and enjoy...
If you're referring to the engine sound, then a diesel is probably not the right choice for you.
Best regards,
Jan is happy that the box is well-insulated and makes very little noise. 1Z5 CFHF / AHB H4D

Yes, my engine sound...
Otherwise, the Steg 105.4x with the 12W3-D2 and the Rodek 164CP will also work well for mood enhancement when an MP3 CD is inserted into the JVC KS-DH99R *angib* .

I prefer to stick with the standard radio; it's impossible for anyone to steal because it only works in other Ibiza models (due to its specific design), and the CD changer isn't visible from the outside either.
It's probably still better than if some idiots, who are plentiful here in Berlin, break everything to steal a radio.
And the Seat series speakers aren't actually that bad (and they come in sets of six)!
Regarding the engine sound: Based on what's been discussed here, modifications to the exhaust system are unlikely to achieve the effect you desire and will probably just create more noise.
Be glad that it's not too loud, then you can enjoy your music better!

Well, with a 1.8T engine, I can probably listen to music quite well even while driving at a relaxed pace and keeping the RPMs below 3000.
Furthermore, the system definitely enhances the sound quality!
So, again:
low diesel consumption, quick acceleration, weak top speed, no engine sound.
1.8T: High fuel consumption, slower acceleration, high top speed, awesome sound (with modifications...).
Does anyone know the fuel consumption of a 1.8T engine under normal driving conditions and when driven aggressively?

Something else to install...
A TDI would certainly be easier than a 1.8T, because with the latter, all the electrical components would have to be replaced, essentially requiring a complete rebuild... With a TDI, you'd only need a new engine (on websites like www.mobile.de, a G3 with the AFN engine costs around €8,000).

Okay, I would go with the TDI engine. You can really put your foot down and still get a maximum of 8 liters per 100 kilometers (or roughly 19 miles per gallon).
I once drove a 1.8T that got 17 liters per 100 kilometers... honestly.
That's a joke! Just buy yourself a TDI!
Arne.

Regarding fuel consumption for the 1.8T engine, I can't say much... even though my parents have one. If you're driving on the highway with a lot of acceleration, you'll quickly reach 12 liters or more per 100 kilometers, but it's probably possible to achieve around 8 liters per 100 kilometers. However, that's in a Passat.
Last summer, I drove the car 600 km with a caravan (weighing 600 kg), and it consumed 11.5 liters of fuel (on country roads, at speeds of 80-90 km/h). This summer, we'll probably do the same thing with the TDI – let's see what kind of consumption we get, hopefully significantly less.
Regarding the cost of used TDIs... finding a *good* one requires a lot of time and patience, and unfortunately, it's also very expensive. Back then, the best offer I found was for 22,000 DM, which would have been a '97 G3 with a 1Z engine and 80,000 kilometers. That was definitely too much for me, so I ended up paying an extra 4,500 DM and bought a new Ibiza TDI with 110 horsepower. At that price point, it simply wouldn't have been worth it to go with the used car.

17 liters um... yes...
So, as described...
A G3 with 110 horsepower and an AFN engine costs €8000.
Wouldn't it be much cheaper to buy an old G3 TDI and install a 110hp AFN engine instead?
Does anyone know the prices for a new or used engine and transmission?
Would modifications other than the axles and transmission be necessary for a TDI conversion?
The base could then be a G3 TD.

Hi Holy,
So, if you really value the sound of the engine, then the TDI is not the right choice for you. You might be able to make it loud or very loud, but you will never achieve the sound of a 1.8T with a "sport" exhaust system.
Regarding consumption, I agree with Arne.
Why don't you just buy yourself a G3 with an AFN?
You'll need to modify the braking system. For example, the AFN model has disc brakes on the rear.
For the TD drums, you don't just need the motor; you also need all the external components that go with it.
I haven't looked into it specifically before, but I think that the conversion would be more expensive than buying a used G3 with an AFN engine.
