There is no scheduled maintenance interval for this component. Neither Bosch nor Volkswagen/Audi specify one.
The parts are wear items and should be replaced if necessary (if they are defective).

Are you already familiar with what 'implies' means, Bertil? icon_wink.gif

Hi Julian,

Okay, I understand. I just wanted to write it in plain German so that there wouldn't be any misunderstandings later on, especially for people who might not understand such expressions.

Okay, I understood your discussion to mean that after a certain mileage, the injectors should be replaced as a precaution, even if they are intact and the engine is running perfectly. icon_wink.gif
Then all the ambiguities are now cleared up! icon_cool.gif

That's how I understood it too!
'My lime (presumably referring to a component in a vehicle) is still the original one. Should I replace it now as a preventative measure, since it's a wear item and has been working for 10 years and 300,000 km? But nobody does that!'
And I think a damaged engine due to worn nozzles is also more of an exception, right?

You can clearly measure the LIMA as either defective or not defective, just like you can assess whether the nozzles on the tip are defective or not.
As long as the spray pattern from the nozzles is good, you can leave them in place. However, if the spray pattern becomes unsatisfactory or the parts start to leak and drip, it's time to replace them immediately.

I doubt that. I've seen piston melting in some TDI engines before, even in unmodified engines. In most cases, a faulty injector (or injectors) was likely the cause of the damage.
Unfortunately, engines with such high mileage are rarely subjected to detailed analysis, and therefore the number of unreported cases of damage is likely quite high.

Also Düsen raus - Spritzbild prüfen - wenn okay dann wieder rein, sonst neu. Ist doch ganz einfach! Ohe?

Yes, everything is fine.
...
By the way, with the Phaeton, the "vehicle life" is actually defined as 300,000 km... I'm curious to see if the PD elements of the V10 TDI can withstand that icon_rolleyes.gif.

'A car and an engine are two completely different things...'

Do you want to bet? VW argues like this...
'Yeah, yeah, the car has already reached 300,000 km. But the injectors won't last that long... those will definitely fail sooner...'

I'm sorry, but I can't understand how you intend to visually inspect the spray pattern without any tools. It's a mystery to me.
When you press the trigger, the nozzles rattle and spray very quickly.
You can't see anything there. The opening pressure and dripping rate can be checked.

In research, transparent engines are used where laser technology and expensive cameras can capture images of the injection process at nanosecond intervals. The resulting images allow researchers to assess the spray pattern.

Best regards,
Albrecht.

The eye can easily distinguish between the individual beams. For example, if a sprinkler head is clogged, you can usually see it with the naked eye.

Sure. Just because the nozzle seems to be atomizing the liquid evenly and finely doesn't necessarily mean it's completely okay. It requires experience or a direct comparison with a new one.

Heijo, it seems there are two major culprits at play again? icon_wink.gif Almost all mechanical parts in a Golf4 are designed to last for approximately 300,000 km. The fact that VW is now talking about 150,000 km makes sense. In mechanical engineering, a safety factor of 2 is usually used. 2 x 150,000 km = ? By the way, their statistics also fit with 10 x 15,000 km.

I don't care..... I was in an A4 (8E) taxi with a PD_130 engine earlier. The car had almost 190,000 km on it. Initially, the PD injectors were replaced once due to idling issues, but since then, these are the same injectors that have been working. That would be something for Ulf's statistics. icon_wink.gif

Sorry, but how you intend to check the spray pattern with your bare eyes is a mystery to me.

Then take a look at this. So, I definitely see a small (insignificant icon_wink.gif) difference:

Hello Bertil,

That's exactly what I mean. You can see something in a photo taken with a very short exposure time.
"But who has equipment like that? To my knowledge, even the Bosch service doesn't do that."
Right next to the injector testing device, the individual injectors are making so much noise... I wouldn't dare make any judgments about it.

I was quite amazed when I saw it for the first time icon_eek.gif.

Best regards,
Albrecht.

You can see that with the naked eye. One of my 1Z nozzles looked similar. The issue was clear.
By the way, the exposure time isn't that short; otherwise, you wouldn't see the beam appear so blurred in its original state. With the fog, it seems to be extremely short, as droplets are visible.

The nozzles have also accumulated 5000 operating hours! That's a value that a TDI engine only achieves in the rarest of cases!

Manuel.

.... if you calculate based on 5000 hours with an average speed of 60 km/h, you get 300,000 km. ---> How old were the nozzles of "Wurstblinker"? icon_biggrin.gif icon_wink.gif

"No, of course, very few cars will reach 5000 operating hours, but the deterioration of the spray pattern is also a continuous process."
Furthermore, I assume that the nozzles of a commercial vehicle (as shown in the picture) are slightly better and last longer than those of a passenger car.
