I would like to share my experience regarding the retrofitting of the freewheel mechanism here.

'Ever since I've owned my Golf (since 1998), I've been dealing with the loud humming noise caused by the ribbed belt. In my '97 AHU, this problem was particularly severe due to the automatic transmission (in short: a different flywheel). But every owner of the manual transmission AHU=1Z without a freewheel clutch also knows this problem. For me, the only solution has been frequent replacement of the belt and tensioner (every 20-30,000 km), which costs about €80.'
Now I finally have some free time!
More precisely, I installed a completely new timing belt kit with a tensioner on Friday because it was overall cheaper than just retrofitting the tensioner onto my existing timing belt . The old belt, tensioner pulley, and tensioning element are still in place for testing purposes.
Please note that my current tensioner and tensioning element are completely broken. The tensioning element is completely worn out and already slightly slipping, and the tensioner has a significant amount of play in its bearing. Recently, the belt has not only been flapping and humming significantly within the resonance range (1200 – 1600 RPM), but also at low load .

I recently installed the automatic tensioner myself, and the timing chain is now quiet.
I was skeptical at first, but it's actually amazing how many noises have disappeared now.
Some of the vibrations and noises that I've been experiencing since buying the car are now gone.
I can only recommend the upgrade.
I took some pictures of the conversion process, but I'm still looking for a way to get them online.

The part number is the one mentioned above: 028 903 119 AA. I was lucky with the price. A former TDI driver had this roller still in its original packaging on a shelf and no longer needed it. I got it for 25 euros.
The conversion went quite quickly. However, you need to remove or at least loosen the tensioner pulley of the ribbed belt, otherwise the lower bolt of the alternator won't come out.
To remove the old bearing, I clamped a SW24 socket into the vise. Then, I held the alternator in place with a screw within the socket and used a multi-spline wrench through the ratchet hole to loosen the generator shaft.
To properly tighten the new disc, you'll need the multi-tooth adapter (see pictures). Otherwise, there's no way to securely fasten the new screw.
I once disassembled the generator. Even after 10 years and 325,000 kilometers, the bearings are still in good condition. You can tell that the slip rings have experienced some wear.
