I've now ordered the standard coated ATE brake discs and pads for my local workshop. The material costs me the same amount as the VAG-Eco discs and pads.

I will then see icon_razz.gif how the lenses age...

@ Steffen W:
I'm still interested in the pictures of your brakes, especially because my rear brake discs also look quite bad, despite me using the handbrake frequently!

Sure, no problem. It will take about 2 weeks, though.
On page 1, I've uploaded a sample image of a new TRW-PB disc for anyone who's interested.

Okay, the front ones are probably "Jo" brand, but the ones in the back will likely wear out and need to be replaced after about a year of use.

I have to correct myself:
Yesterday, on stage, I took the opportunity to attach the SR icon_eek.gif and also took a closer look at the HA discs - and they look much better than the rust edge would suggest: beautifully clean friction surfaces without any penetrating rust from the inside or outside }.
Therefore, it's actually beneficial that I manually perform at least half of my non-emergency braking maneuvers.
Now, I just need to figure out how to get these new VA brakes to wear in properly, so that the friction surfaces remain clean.

Initial practical experiences with the new ATE material on the VA:
a. Less delay with the same pedal force.
b. After braking, the right brake disc is noticeably warmer than the left one.
The wheels don't seem to be locked, and even when the brakes are applied while the car is stationary, it can still be pushed with normal effort.

Although I haven't noticed any clear braking inconsistencies so far, and even though the rotors and pads came in separate packages, it's likely that the differences in friction coefficients of the material pairings are the cause.
I've driven about 50 km with the new ATE brake pads so far, with only a few braking maneuvers. Do the braking characteristics typically improve with more mileage?

Based on my own experience: They generally get better over time. However, the valve guides and valve seats are somewhat loose, but everything eventually returns to its resting position.

EDIT: Are there perhaps different types of flooring for "innen" (inside) and "aussen" (outside)?

Drive, and especially brake a little bit at first. After 50 km, you shouldn't expect a 100% result!

I think so, otherwise you wouldn't be able to easily push the car after a strong push and releasing the brake.

}Are there perhaps different types of seals for "inside" and "outside"? } Yes, but the distinction is really foolproof: The inner seals have a clip that is inserted into the piston, making external mounting impossible due to the clips.

Okay then... First, accept it and gradually get used to the idea of being brake pads.

Photos by Ulf:
Rear and front brakes from a Passat 3B. The pictures were taken today during a wheel change, without any cosmetic alterations. Both are TRW brakes from 2009, so they've seen about 3 winters. The calipers, brackets, and brake lines for the rear brakes are new and were recently installed.
The car had been sitting for the past two weeks because we were on vacation, and today it was driven about 20 km before we were going to change the tires.
The driving and braking profile looks like this: I never use my handbrake to clean the rear brake discs. I usually try to drive smoothly and anticipate situations. But I also don't let the car roll endlessly just to avoid or minimize braking. It's just normal driving. I rarely drive above 150 km/h. I don't have a trailer hitch. The car is driven 70 km daily on country roads, plus some city traffic, and also regular longer stretches on the highway. A bit of everything. icon_biggrin.gif
I cleaned the wheels today before the summer tires were mounted. See picture 3. The brakes are running perfectly smoothly. There is no vibration.
I'm satisfied. The ATE brakes that were in before looked completely different after the same amount of time, especially in the rear.

Wow, that looks really good for the age, especially the rear axle (unless the B3 had more rear brake pressure than the Polo platform beforehand).
Thank you for the photos icon_biggrin.gif.

By the way, my brake discs are no longer warming up to such different temperatures after braking, and the brakes are now also gripping better with the same pedal pressure.

The Passat brakes at the rear, that's no question. Ours is rarely heavily loaded and will no longer be used for vacation trips.
Here are some pictures of the Sharan's brakes. But not before Easter. This one also has TRW brakes. However, the rear ones are not painted. They won't look as good outside the braking surface.
The VW Sharan also brakes at the rear under normal loading conditions. This brake will also show clear signs of wear and use.

Hi!

Topran brake discs are also a good option.
They are, by far, the cheapest ones available.

I installed a similar one in both of my Golfs about 3 years ago.
completely front and back.

They look just like the pictures posted by Steffen W.
Perhaps even a little bit better.

I mostly use the cars for short trips.
10 km daily.

Unfortunately, these brake discs are only available pre-lubricated, but the brake pads also last a very long time.
Unfortunately, a brake pad fell off the front of a Golf 4 a few days ago.
That's very annoying.
Otherwise, I would have recommended these brake parts as being good, at least for inexpensive repairs on smaller cars.

But I will still continue to use the brake discs.
when it comes to money.

Probably tomorrow is the day for the tire change.
I can also take some pictures if you'd like.
Grüße, Steffen!

That's actually a good reason to warn people about products like that, rather than recommending such junk (sorry).

Something like that comes from something like that. Stinginess isn't always a good thing. Especially when it comes to brakes. He's right about that. icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif
