Hi there,
You can omit the internal spline on the shaft if you remove the alternator, take off the rear cover, and clamp the rotor in a vise.
Otherwise, I would recommend not postponing the replacement for too long. In my case, after a year, the shock absorber on the KW suspension also failed, and that's quite expensive to replace.
Greetings,
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

That's why I did the retrofit.
Two span elements per year will eventually become too expensive...

Hello,
@ dieselmartin : If I'm not mistaken, that's a size 10 internal Torx wrench.
I bought the set mentioned above from IGay – it's more than sufficient for a hobbyist.
"My Lima alternator recently failed after 235,000 km (Bosch 120A with freewheel, from an AFN engine). For a short time, I installed a Valeo alternator (90A) without a freewheel, which I had bought cheaply from a scrapyard some time ago for such occasions."
Mit voller großer Batterie und abgeschalteten Verbrauchern sind übrigens noch ein paar Stunden Fahrt drin.
The difference is enormous! Especially when idling, you could hear the wear on the belt with every rotation .
By the way, it's not a problem to replace the bearings or even the entire rotor in alternators. In my case, the carbon brushes of the regulator were completely worn out, and the commutator rings were so deeply grooved that I replaced both at the same time.
By the way, this is also intentional: The carbon brushes are too hard so that the wear on the rotor is excessive; softer ones should be replaced every 150,000 kilometers, and the alternator will last forever.
The Bosch rotor already comes with a bearing on the slip ring side. On the drive side, you can install a simple bearing for about 10 euros (the one from Bosch costs around 25 euros). This way, I paid 75 euros for the rotor and 49 euros for the regulator, effectively getting a practically new alternator for about 135 euros.
If someone has brushes that are still in good condition, but the bearing on the side has failed – be careful! Bosch tried to prevent this type of bearing replacement – don't just pull it off! You can easily damage the contact rails of the two rings and dislodge them from the coil.
Remove the cage, extract the balls, and take off the outer ring. Now carefully grind down the inner ring (avoid generating too much heat!), then slightly widen it and remove it – pressing in the new bearing is usually quite easy.
Maybe this will be helpful to someone someday.
Best regards!
Sebastian.

Okay, free-range [farming/products] are a go.
Duration: 10 minutes.
- Remove the air filter housing.
- V-belt slipped off.
- Use the 24mm wrench and the 10mm multi-tool to loosen the old fitting.
- Add Caramba.
- Remove the old pulley.
- Tighten the new rotor (freehub) with a 10mm socket and a Hazet 2592 torque wrench.
- Belt on.
- Put air freshener in.
Test drive:
Yeah, it's definitely something else, but of course, it won't be a Golf 4 right away (because the Golf 3 is simply too soft to be quiet).
Oh yeah, I still have the old span element in there.
But the tension arm is already perfectly stable!

Just think about what you're getting for 8-9 euros, especially when someone else also wants to make a profit from it.
This time, it should work. Gruß, der Teileklaus

It seems like it eventually gets everyone. In my car (ATD engine), the freewheel mechanism also disintegrated at 200,000 km – I initially thought the rattling noise at idle might be due to a faulty dual-mass flywheel (ZMS), which was quite alarming.

... I hope I only need to replace this thing once. I had just upgraded from a 120A Lima alternator to a 140A one two months ago, and during that process, I also replaced the freewheel clutch, which was perfectly fine then! I don't understand how it could go from being in perfect condition to complete failure in such a short time.
EDIT: Das BGS Dingens taugt was !
Best regards, Sven.

Hi, I have quite a bit of "BGS" tools, which is absolutely fine for hobbyists; it's somewhere between hardware store quality and brand-name quality. Passat 3B AFN Syncro, E46 330D, T3 1,7TDI, T3-Syncro TD

I also have tools from "BGS". They are a bit better than the cheap, soft stuff you find in hardware stores, and perfectly adequate for hobbyists and occasional use. In any case, despite frequent use, I haven't had anything break or malfunction in my socket set yet. Automobile Zeitzeugen: |SUZUKI Swift Sport (2008)| |Smart 450 (2002)| |Honda CB 125 F (2018)|

As a hobbyist, I ended up buying tools from SW-Stahl... the quality is good, and so far I've only broken the small Torx bits (T8 - T15). It's probably a problem of tightening torque rather than the quality of the bit itself.
I ended up buying the complete set of specialized tools for clamping wheel bearing housings/spring struts, etc., from Hazet.

I am quite well-equipped with "Proxxon" products.
My local tool supplier can get me all the individual items I need quickly and at good prices. The balance between price and quality has been satisfactory for me so far.
