Hi,

We can almost start betting on when the first "tuning tips" for filters will appear on the market, which will likely essentially recommend removing the internal components. Unless they're specifically comparing the pressure before and after the filter, I doubt the MSG (Mass Spectrometer) would even notice.

Otherwise, it's just politics aimed at squeezing more money out of people's pockets. Last year it was particulate matter; now there are filters that solve less than 5% of the problem (tire wear and other issues remain), while also increasing fuel consumption. Now it's about CO2 emissions, although... let's not be naive, a "filter car" will naturally emit more than others.

It's not really interesting that my car, with its ASV (emission control system) already close to the 120 mark today, still makes me pay more taxes than a gasoline-powered car with a 5.0 engine used by a politician in their official vehicle.

Best regards,

January.

Hello,

Are there already any experiences regarding the increased fuel consumption associated with retrofitting filters?
There are some that are added in addition to the existing catalytic converter (KAT), and others that combine the KAT and filter into a single component.
What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of these two options?

Off-Topic:
Does the presence of a catalytic converter and muffler actually make that much difference? I'm inclined to doubt it.

Best regards, Matthias.

I believe the motivation for this stems primarily from the requirement that when installing a DPF in a car whose catalytic converter has over 80,000 km, the catalytic converter must be replaced. Therefore, a separate solution would mean buying both a new DPF *and* a new catalytic converter, which probably no one would do, as it would further worsen the already poor cost-effectiveness calculation. The combination filters (catalytic converter + DPF) mitigate this problem considerably.

Best regards,

January.

That's probably the reason, because I believe the 'combined DPF' is only about €100 more expensive than a regular DPF.
Is the combination of the package and installation not better?
What about back pressure? DPF with catalytic converter versus combined DPF.

What about retrofitting DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters) and their impact on fuel consumption in general?

Best regards, Matthias.

icon_twisted.gif Could you please discuss such off-topic questions in a separate thread? icon_twisted.gif

Then someone will be able to find these (actually important) questions using the search function! Here, this topic just disappears. Thank you!

What's off-topic about it? This thread is about information regarding the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). And that includes the two retrofit options I mentioned and their effects. Therefore, I think it fits perfectly here.

Best regards, Matthias.

(because I can't find a more suitable thread)

Does anyone know if the current EU consumption cycle includes regeneration processes?
Or does the cycle start with a clean DPF and end with a partially clogged one, so that the regeneration phases are only noticeable to the unsuspecting customer who, when using a factory-installed DPF, experiences an everyday fuel consumption significantly higher than the standard values, more so than they were used to with their previous cars?

The energy consumption figures according to Directive 93/116/EEC, obtained using the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), date back to 1996...

It's only being driven up to the 5th gear, and I absolutely can't imagine that a DPF regeneration cycle is being implemented. How on earth are they supposed to achieve that consistently and reproducibly...?

To be honest:

I have never had any problems with fuel consumption figures provided by Volkswagen.

Passat LT: VW claims 6.4 liters per 100km, I'm getting 6.8 (with a lot of short trips in the city).
Both the Golf 3 TDI and the Golf 2 D models were also performing perfectly according to expectations.

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

Yes, I know it! ... The answer is NO!

The EU cycle is far too short for that.

Even when measuring emissions, the regeneration process is not taken into account. icon_twisted.gif

Ah, that finally explains in a politically acceptable way why the particulate matter levels in those nonsensical zones are not clearly decreasing despite the sticker requirement:
If the "bad, bad" diesel cars are driving in a low-emission zone, they release everything that they have been storing in the DPF until then! In reality, even those diesel cars with DPFs are not as clean as they seem, and therefore should finally be completely banned icon_exclaim.gif.
So it seems that soon only gasoline-powered cars will be allowed in these ridiculous zones, where their high fuel consumption in the city will generate much more tax revenue than those "evil" diesel vehicles.

@ulfViewing profile: ulf: What do you think about the retrofit caps?

Have you ever disassembled a brand new item like that before?

The large metal surface of the filter takes some time to become coated and saturated with soot. In doing so, it naturally removes soot from the exhaust gases. Especially when condensation forms on the new, clean metal surface, it acts like a flytrap for soot particles.
However, this seems to coincide with the measurement cycle, which is why effectiveness is then confirmed.

If you were to complete the cycle 3 or 4 times, you would return to the values as if the retrofit caps were not installed.

Therefore, it is also common practice (I know of cases where this has been done) to bring the test vehicle with a truck, push it onto the dynamometer, and only start it for the first time there icon_twisted.gif.

But only if they are not direct injection engines (FSI, TSI, or GDI...). icon_eek.gif The Russians are extremely problematic in terms of particulate emissions. icon_eek.gif

Yes, THEN... then only electric cars that are twice as expensive can be allowed in. icon_lol.gif

Just the VAT on a new purchase would require burning through a lot of fuel.
