Hello.
I have a Golf III TD (diesel) manufactured in 1997, with a 1.9L engine. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get more horsepower out of the TD engine? I was thinking about increasing the turbocharger pressure or using a chip tuning solution, or something else. Maybe someone has a good idea or tips on where I can read more about it! Preferably in a good and cost-effective way.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Hi!
There are many possibilities for increasing horsepower in your vehicle. All of them share one thing: if done correctly, you'll enjoy driving more and typically won't experience any limitations in terms of driving comfort or increased fuel consumption. On Rainer's homepage, you can find articles about chip tuning/power boxes as well as "10-cent tuning." You'll find a lot of information there.
Best regards,
Uwe

Hi.
Does this also apply to a turbocharged diesel engine? I don't have a TDI! As far as I understand, this is only for TDIs.
Unfortunately, it's only a TDI with 55 kW (75 hp), but it has a 1.9-liter engine.

Yep, that won't work for you. Your car doesn't have a 'chip' in the same way as a TDI. However, given the year of manufacture, it's possible you might have an AGR valve.
Your engine has the AAZ code, which is always good to specify. Just take a look at my website; it might help you.

Hey Golf III!
"Sorry, I misread; I thought it was a TDI. But I think there are still things you can do to improve the performance – just not as much and it might be a bit more involved."
Best regards,
Uwe

Hello,
You might be able to retrofit an intercooler with a bit of ingenuity.
That would probably add about 20 horsepower.
Then you should also increase the boost pressure a bit. However, I have no idea how to do that best on an AAZ engine.
Perhaps with a steam valve on the wastegate.
You should ask someone who knows about this now.
Best regards,
The Golfman.
