A3 Trunk Lid: Different Versions Available

I have a question about the different versions of the A3 8L rear hatch.

I want to replace the tailgate of a 1997 model with one from 1999 (both are pre-facelift versions). However, there are still differences (for example, the door handles were changed starting in 9/9: The latch is attached differently, with an M8 bolt instead of an M6 bolt.

Looking at the parts list, it's noticeable that all the different parts are different – the locking plate, the end plate, the locking mechanism, etc.
Now, I don't want to exchange everything, just what is absolutely necessary.

Does anyone know what needs to be replaced? I ordered the bolt catch and the latch plate just in case.

Okay, here's my experience report:

The lock mechanism needs to be replaced with a version newer than 9/98.

A new connecting rod will then need to be ordered (it connects the bolt catch to the locking mechanism).

Then you also need the newer latch plate, which unfortunately still needs to be manually adjusted because the end plate has been changed. New holes need to be drilled, and the latch plate needs to be shortened.

While technically feasible, it's overall quite unsightly, so it's better to pay attention to the manufacturing year of the replacement part.
