Hello, I have a G4 with an AJM engine.
After 10,000 km following the timing belt replacement at 120,000 km, the mounting point for the engine mount on the right side of the engine block, in the direction of travel, has broken off.

Has this happened to anyone else?

This has happened before in this forum and in other forums as well.
It always turned out to be due to assembly errors and improperly torqued fasteners.

(Torque wrench? I don't need one, I can do it by feel...) <- Original quote from one of my former workshops.

Take a look at this:

https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=1254

If the timing belt was replaced at the workshop, then the work was done incorrectly.
They have to stand in line for that.

hello,

I've now read the article as well... The problem is that the workshop (VW dealer) doesn't see any fault on their side. Their insurance company, VVD, has commissioned an expert who confirms this. I've also commissioned my own expert, with legal support, to see how they assess the situation.

Today, the expert I ordered for an assessment examined the car.
Clear result: one of the three motor mounting screws had come loose or was not properly tightened. Consequently, the threaded insert was overloaded over time and eventually broke off.
So, there's definitely a clear error during the timing belt installation... icon_lol.gif
This should ensure that the dealer covers the cost of the repair. I'm curious to see how he will react.

"Should," "would have," and other subjunctive forms are not worth the money.

Given the costs involved, it is highly likely that this will result in a legal dispute.

- Start looking for a lawyer.
- Check if Jakob's business is a registered trade association (if so, it might be possible to resolve the issue without involving the courts).

Greetings.

From the very first day, everything has to be handled through a lawyer; it's impossible to do it without one.
The car dealership is part of the trade association. Let's see how things develop; I definitely returned the "black Peter" (a derogatory term).

"Yes, I completely agree (personally). It's probably because the lower rear screw wasn't tightened, as it's the most difficult to access."

In my opinion, it depends on how much time has passed since the timing belt was replaced.
If it's less than 6 months, the chances are good. The icon_biggrin.gif is in the position of having to prove that they worked properly, which will be difficult.

After 6 months, things become difficult because that's when the burden of proof shifts. This means you have to prove to him that he was negligent, which is also challenging. How, for example, are you going to prove that there were no material defects in the screws, or that no unauthorized person has worked on the car in the meantime?

In this case, you and your expert should first consider, before going to court, how and with what evidence the icon_biggrin.gif might be able to refute or disprove the accusation.
In plain terms, what arguments could he put forward that you cannot disprove?
It is also important that all defective parts and screws are actually present.

Hello, I agree with everything you've said, but I'd like to know the vehicle's year of manufacture and which letter designates the engine type.
Because this problem was known to Volkswagen in the past, but I can give you more details once I have some data about it.

Please ask another dealer to check very thoroughly in the HST archive. There was a change to the engine block related to this problem during the model change in 2001. However, it's possible that this information was removed from the HST. A good dealer should still know about it, but I don't think it will help you much. However, it can't hurt to ask, or you could contact VW directly.

Thanks for the information. I think that after 7 years, Volkswagen will no longer offer any goodwill coverage for any part.

"Probably not, but it's important information to have, especially if a legal dispute arises, because you could end up looking foolish. So, it's worth protecting yourself, and it doesn't cost anything."

Sure, asking questions doesn't cost anything, I'll look into it in the next few days. icon_biggrin.gif
