Passat 3C 2.0: Glow Plug Light Flashing, Limp Mode

The preheating indicator light would sometimes flash, and the car would go into emergency mode. After turning it off and restarting, everything would be okay again.
Three weeks ago, after a few consecutive starts, the warning light remained on continuously, and it has been like that ever since. The car is now constantly running in limp mode.
