Hi,

I could buy a high-quality roof rack at a very good price, used. It attaches to the roof rails with clamping jaws. The clamping jaws are designed for a VW Golf IV Variant. My car is a Passat 35i estate, and unfortunately, I don't know if the clamping jaws will also fit my roof rails.
Does anyone know if the shape/cross-section of the railings on these two vehicle models are identical?
(The seller is too far away from me for me to just drive by.)

Best regards.
Florian.

I don't think they fit.

To the best of my knowledge, the following were suitable:

35i (3A) - Volkswagen Golf 3
3B/3BG - Golf 4

I still have original G3 Var struts in their original VW bag, which I believe will fit the 35i.
I'll check that.

If interested, please send a private message.
I can definitely still find a 35i for testing icon_wink.gif.

First of all, thank you very much for the quick response, dieselmartin!

I've been doing a little searching online, and now I'm confused. I previously thought my car was a 35i, but after looking at the Passat entries on Wikipedia, I now believe it's not a 35i, but rather a 'B4' or 'Type 3A'.
The first registration was definitely in 1994, and it has a front grille.

Does that change anything?
It would be nice icon_smile.gif

Best regards,
Florian.

I believe the railing was not changed between the years 1988 and 1997.

The instructions on my carrier state what it is compatible with.
"3A" hasn't quite caught on.

Just like the current 3AA is actually still a 3C.

But the names don't matter, I'll check if my poles fit, and you tell me if you want them icon_smile.gif.

Thank you for the offer.
However, I don't think you need to go to that much trouble. Unless your carriers are from the company Zölzer. I would use those for transporting kayaks, as I already have a few simple ones. The ones you could buy now are specifically designed for that purpose and are very high quality (with an adjustable vertical support, end caps with loops, and all sorts of extras). With that, I would be able to put 5 fully-sized kayaks on the roof instead of just three. icon_smile.gif

Okay.

You were talking about "supporting structures," not about complete transportation systems icon_wink.gif.

What is installed in the T-slot of the original VW roof rack is up to the end customer.

I'll clarify it anyway, because that will also increase my pool of potential customers.

So far, I've been able to use my roof rack (Thule crossbars) with all the cars I've owned.

From the '93 Passat, through the '97 Galaxy, the 2001 Laguna, and the 2003 Mondeo, all the way to the Passat 3C and now the '07 A4, it has always worked.
Are there really such big differences there?

You secure the whole thing by screwing it onto the roof rails.
Did you think this would be universal?!

Hi!
The clamping jaws of the roof rack from Sport Zölzer are different from those of Thule. They are not universal. After a second phone call to Zölzer, during which a friendly employee "took me" to the workshop to compare the milling models for both clamping jaw variants, I learned that they do not fit. However, it might be possible to have the clamping jaws of the roof rack that I can purchase milled to fit. New ones would be as expensive as the entire used carrier. icon_sad.gif
But I think I'm now straying a bit too far from the actual topic of this forum... icon_smile.gif
