Good morning.
I'm having a small problem with my AFN.
In the last few days, the car has been starting very poorly in cold weather, and I replaced the glow plugs yesterday, but one of them broke off in the process.
The starting behavior has remained as bad as before. 'Bad' means: at least one minute of cranking. I now want to replace the 80-amp fuse, even though the continuity tester indicated continuity. At the same time, I also want to replace the fuel filter tomorrow.
Okay, here's my question: Could it be that it's still starting so poorly because of a faulty glow plug? And another question: Do I need to remove the cylinder head, or is there a tool that allows you to remove the glow plug without doing that?

Edit:
The fuse I tested was located in the fuse box, above a relay.
He has another one in the engine compartment, and visually it looks like it might be defective. I'm going to replace it right away.

Your starting problem could have many causes. Given the current temperatures, the glow plugs probably shouldn't be an issue. Or, what's the temperature where you are?

"One minute of organ playing sounds more like air trapped in the system, which needs to be bled out. Please have someone else check the clear tubing for air bubbles when starting it up."

Crankshaft bolt, okay?
Is the start of the spraying process okay?

Hello TDI-GTI-4-Motion,

Thank you very much for your reply!
You're right about the candles... The temperatures should actually be sufficient.
The timing belt was replaced 4000 km ago, and the car has full power (it was on the highway yesterday). I'll now get a tester to check the injection timing and temperature, etc.
The flexible hoses that run from nozzle to nozzle are also in poor condition. It's possible that air is being drawn in through them. However, nothing is leaking out.
I just jump-started the battery and replaced the fuse, but nothing worked.
I'm going to change the filter tomorrow and I'll follow your advice about the air in the line!

Thank you very much, until then!
I'll get back to you when that's been checked.

Then replace them. That's the #1 source of air leaks.

It doesn't have to, where air goes in, diesel doesn't necessarily have to come out. icon_wink.gif

Thank you!
I was just able to get some filters.
I'm going to rebuild that first, and I'll get the leak detection lines from the friendly mechanic next door tomorrow.

Short update: New filter installed, and the oxidized ground cable has been cleaned and is now making good contact again.
No result yet. I just checked it on the track, and it seems to be pulling well. Sometimes there's a blue smoke. Possibly due to load changes. It seems like the fuel line is leaking, allowing some diesel to escape. I'll replace the lines tomorrow.

Good morning.

This morning, the car wouldn't start when my wife was trying to drive it to work.
I had it towed to the workshop.
The viscous fan also runs briefly when the ignition is turned on. That's not necessarily normal, is it?
Without being able to read the error codes and sensor data, it will probably be difficult to find the problem. Unfortunately, I don't have the equipment to do that.

Coolant temperature sensor.
Try unplugging it and trying again.

I'm also now tapping into sensors!
And then, a leak in the pipeline would explain the problem.
However, I had to replace the sensor (blue) a year ago.
I took the car to the authorized service center.

I was told this morning that you could only pick up the car at 10:00 AM.
I then made some phone calls and, together with my brother, we towed the car.
Upon delivery, there was a question raised about whether the car might not be finished today.
A phone call I made around 3:30 PM did not provide any clarification, as the technician was on a test drive with another vehicle.
It's almost 6 PM now, and we still haven't received a call back to let us know whether the vehicle is ready or not.
Since tomorrow is a holiday, I think it should have been done already.
Bad authorized repair shop!
'I suppose I'll hear from them eventually... I wouldn't call that good service. I'll report here what the problem was, if the authorized workshop manages to find it.'

Thanks everyone!!

Here are the details I provided to the workshop when I dropped off the car:

The vehicle has been starting poorly in cold weather lately (and wouldn't start at all today).
Even yesterday, although it wasn't that cold (so the candles wouldn't have been lit).
Spark plugs are new (one was torn but is sealed), fuel filter is new, timing belt was replaced 4000 km ago, and the glow plug system fuse is new.
Nozzles are leaking (between nozzles).
The viscous fan briefly starts when the ignition is turned on.
The mass cable has been connected to the gearbox housing.

Injection start failed? Temperature sensor defective (despite being less than a year old)?
When it's running, it's performing at full capacity! It was tested on the highway just yesterday.

Tonight, you finally managed to take a look at my car.
Allegedly, the valve timing is incorrect, and you wouldn't be able to adjust the pump like that. It would smoke excessively. However, on Sunday, it was still running over 200 km/h according to the speedometer, and without any problems.

Crankshaft bolt, as mentioned previously, for TDI-GTI-4Motion?

I will provide an update tomorrow.

Here's a small, funny addition to the master's statement: he smoked us out when we were starting up.

I'm not surprised that it's smoking. After all, we've tried to start it enough times. When it started at my house (meaning in the days before), you couldn't see anything on the street because of the fog *g*. Around the corner, everything was normal again. But now we've been tinkering with it a bit more, and it won't start *g*. Diesel fuel, as you know, evaporates very poorly, or not at all. icon_biggrin.gif

During my time as an automotive mechanic (which was 20 years ago), we had exhaust extraction systems.
Apparently, not the workshop. icon_biggrin.gif

Good day everyone.

The diagnosis is confirmed, and TDI-GTI-4-Motion was immediately correct with his assumption.

Unfortunately, it's the crankshaft bolt.

The crankshaft will be machined, and a new timing gear, including the screw, will be installed.
Once I have the parts, I'll take some pictures and post them in this thread!

Cost at the dealership: The total price for everything was €350.

I pay a lot of attention to the engine control and prefer to have the timing belt replaced 10,000 km earlier. And now this...
Well, never mind! It could have been worse, or it still might get worse, because it's not finished yet. I've read about this screw before, but since I have a 1998 model, I thought I would be spared this problem. Everything was fine with the screw during the timing belt change 4,000 km ago. But as Dale Carnegie said, don't cry over spilled milk.

Thanks to everyone for reading and helping!
Thank you, TDI-GTI-4-Motion!!

Regards:
Rainer.

Good evening.

I just picked up my car. I had the fuel lines replaced and checked the oil.

Update: I tried it this morning, and the car starts perfectly again.
I'll wait and see if this works out well with the candles.
