Hello dear community,

After a long search on the www, I'm starting a thread here to share my solution to the puzzle icon_rolleyes.gif

Vehicle:
Passat Variant 3BG
MKB: BGW with DPF
KM 205.000km

Regarding my problem, for the past 2 days, I've been hearing a loud "popping/knocking" sound (however you would describe it) coming from the engine compartment.
I can't say exactly how long it has been, as I had been driving for approximately 60 km on the main road before I stopped and noticed it, and it became noticeably louder as I pressed the accelerator.
I stopped immediately to investigate, but at that time I found nothing.
Upon arriving home, I checked the oil level, and to my surprise, there was almost 1 liter over the normal level!?!
Initially, I thought the noise was coming from the area of the air filter. After checking the intake hoses for leaks, I noticed that the noise was still present even after removing the hose after the turbo and LLK (only the AGR and intake bridge remained). This indicates that the noise is coming from the engine!?!

My question is therefore, what is this noise, and what does it have to do with the rapidly increasing engine oil (PD-element defective)? If so, how can I best check it?

No fault codes present. The engine is running normally and smoothly on all 4 cylinders. There is no noticeable power loss or any jerking!
Last oil change before 10,000 km. So far, very little oil consumption has been detected. Oil change intervals are approximately every 15,000 km since I have owned the vehicle.

I have made 2 videos regarding the noise, one with the intake system closed and the other with only the AGR valve connected.
Also a Log MWB 13

I hope you can help me further icon_cry.gif

'Engine knocking' in the intake tract sounds like faulty hydromechanical systems, camshaft issues, etc. icon_wink.gif

Lift the lid, take a look. icon_wink.gif

Remote diagnosis is always difficult... maybe I have some wax in my ears.

First, compare it with a similar vehicle. icon_idea.gif

A few days ago,
Now, I measured the compression with amazement, and achieved around 29 bar on all cylinders.
Then remove the valve covers to inspect the pistons. The 3 pistons can be pushed in approximately 3-4 mm without much effort when in the relaxed state.
I think this explains the knocking, because a piston can be made to knock if you push it back and forth!?!
And the valves are no longer working properly.
One question remains open: could this explain the excessive/motor oil dilution?

I don't think so.... Perhaps the DPF is quite full of ash, and the additive for regeneration is being consumed, which means that active regeneration occurs more frequently than normal.
How much ash is there in the filter?

I will check it again once it's back up.
Can someone please provide the torque specifications for the cam followers (where the bearing races are located) and the rocker arms (pump-nozzle element)?
Den Rest habe ich.

So, after I over-tightened a screw on the cylinder head, it had to be removed and drilled out, with a new thread installed. icon_cry.gif
Cylinder head gasket + new bolts, all gaskets, hydraulic lifters, bearing shells, camshaft.

OT Setting checked perfectly after 4-5 post-checks!

But somehow, I don't have the same performance as before. I re-measured the compression, and the results are still at peak values.
MWB 13 indicates on cylinder 4 +2.99????
Possible issue: Head gasket/Wiring harness
Everything is connected, no error codes in the memory.

Pump-Nozzle Element: Incorrect/Not Adjusted, Incorrectly Installed, or Defective. I would check this first.

Sounds: Bleeding is okay... and also the hoses where the boost pressure is?

Vacuum hoses all properly connected, I replaced a few porous ones.
I have re-adjusted the pump nozzle elements according to the technical articles, and although the seals were not removed, I will be purchasing new ones. I'm wondering why, because I've read a lot that they need to "settle" into the cylinder head. Is it model-dependent?
Let's see if it changes when the seal is replaced. Currently, it still shows -2.99 for Cylinder 4.
