19-06-2016, 16:04 Subject: [Solved] Skoda Octavia, DSG error P17BF, hydraulic play protection. |
Quote |
|
Hello everyone!
My acquaintance's Octavia is experiencing issues, but for now, it's only indicated by a flashing fork symbol alternating with the gear display on the instrument cluster/multifunction display.
This is a 7-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox).
Error codes read from the transmission control unit indicate three instances of "overshift protection" and a problem with the hydraulic pump.
Unfortunately, I can't make any sense of this, so I would appreciate it if you could offer some assistance.
These errors could no longer be cleared from the cold engine without it running, and the "Sporadic" message disappeared.
In the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) of the transmission control unit (TCU), a voltage reading similar to that of the battery was indicated at the hydraulic pump.
Interestingly, no driving behavior issues were noted, except for a very rare, somewhat unusual jolt when starting.
The error symbol in the KI (likely referring to a piece of software or device) only appears sporadically, and it also disappears again after a few days or weeks.
I immediately suspected that there were errors or shortcuts taken during the scheduled transmission oil change at 60,000 km, but this inspection was not actually performed by an independent garage, or at least, according to... Service booklet mostly just records oil changes, nothing else was done.
I would be very grateful for any tips you might have! Code: | Sonntag,19,Juni,2016,14:59:53:34514

Hi Bear,
Speculation: The hydraulic pump is not consistently delivering the required pressure.
If that were the case, the error would likely occur primarily when the DSG is hot.
Is the oil level okay and is there enough oil? Have you checked to see if you can find a measurement block for hydraulic pressure?
Best regards, Rainer.

Hello everyone!
Thank you for the tip!
It sounds plausible that it could be related to oil or oil pressure, but I want to logically rule that out, because the registered errors changed from "sporadic" to "permanent" - without the engine running, completely cooled down!
In this state, no pressure should actually be requested.
Otherwise, no logs or similar records were created, because "it was just for a quick look."
I can't make any sense of the term "Spielschutz."
Possibly, I'll have them change the DSG transmission fluid, which is due for a change anyway.
It's difficult to tell if there's enough oil in the VW concept's toilet system, so you often end up having to replace it altogether.
In any case, no oil stains or similar marks were reported on the garage floor.
You're very welcome!
Best regards from Munich!

Hi GlĂŒcksBĂ€rchie,
Quote: | | The possibility that it might be related to oil or oil pressure sounds plausible, BUT I want to logically rule it out, because the registered errors changed from "Sporadic" to permanently static - without the engine running, completely cooled down! |
Don't expect too much logic from the error memory. It's possible (!) that this error is normally only checked and can only be cleared when the engine is running. Since you're doing this with the engine off, the DSG control unit checks the pressure and determines that it's not correct, and therefore changes the error from "intermittent" to "static." This is just one possibility, but in the past, there have been error memory entries in the engine control unit that could only be cleared when the engine was running. Therefore, I would not consider it impossible within the framework of the DSG.
Back to the topic:
The internet says: The hydraulic pump is not building enough pressure, or the pressure is fluctuating too much. DSG-STG believes the pump has excessive play and, in order to protect itself, is claiming a "play protection" error.
The causes appear to be varied, ranging from oil leaks and pump failures to a problem similar to the one that triggered a recall of 7-speed DSG transmissions in China (corrosion caused by sulfur in the DSG oil).
Sure, here's the translation:
"Nice examples:"

Good luck to your acquaintance, and hopefully it's just a lack of oil.
Greetings.

"Spielschutz" refers to a system where a constant pressure is maintained to keep the two pistons in a defined position. While the mechatronics unit includes a pressure accumulator, it won't last forever.
Here you can see the pump.

Hello everyone!
Once again, my sincerest thanks for the explanations!!
Here are two log files with relatively uneventful activity; proper logging of the time and location is not possible.
Here, I have various things for now. The system records speeds and voltages, and later logs additional data such as setpoints and actual values for hydraulic pressure, voltage, and current of the hydraulic pump.
I lack the experience, but "Pressure 1" seems to be the static maximum value at 60 bar, while "Pressure 2" with 42/45/52 bar represents the corresponding minimum or target pressure.
The current interest rate is lower than the previous one. T. is significant, but the pump's target and actual speeds appear normal at a constant 2,100 RPM.
Okay, the current draw from the pump fluctuates quite a bit, but that might be normal *shoulder shrug*. The pump voltage remains stable and close to the vehicle's power supply.
The clutches seem to be holding up well, and despite the error message in the instrument cluster, the shifting is still working. Driving behavior remains harmoniously unchanged.
Regarding the error memory:
Immediately after (a cold) start, the errors reappeared "sporadically" in the memory and could be cleared. Approximately 10 minutes later, they returned with a flashing wrench symbol on the dashboard, and the error message reappeared, still static and unremovable.
It seemed that, for some reason, the factor at play here was time.
I have already found the relevant information, and I was also aware of the oil issue with the DSG beforehand. However, I see more speculation here than concrete solutions.
The service booklet for the vehicle does not contain any entries, and there are no visible maintenance stickers on the A/B pillars.
There should be three indentations on the oil drain plug to indicate that an oil change has already been performed, but I didn't want to disassemble anything there today.
My advice, as before: Have the DSG oil changed with a new filter, and if necessary, [do something else]. Software update for the transmission control unit (GetriebeStG), it seems there are at least two newer versions available.
I will report back, and after the visit to the workshop, I will definitely do another car scan.
Thank you again for your help!!
Best regards from Munich!

Hello everyone!
Addition: GKB's are NAT.
When looking at the RLF (..., one could have checked this beforehand, right? ), it becomes apparent that this "0AM" DSG has TWO DIFFERENT oil fillings.
First, there's the standard transmission oil, which can be drained through a drain plug and then refilled through the shift lever cover (which needs to be removed for this) with a precise fill volume of 1.7 liters.
The oil level cannot be determined â except by changing the oil and collecting the old oil, which, in turn, cannot be reused.
Now things are getting interesting - or sad:
On the other hand, there's a hydraulic oil filling in the mechatronics unit, which is precisely the area that is likely of interest in this post.
"There is no exchange planned." The new mechatronic unit is shipped with the correct oil fill level, and returns must be shipped in a sealed, leak-proof container.
Accordingly, no maintenance procedures such as filter replacement, oil level checks, or oil changes are performed here.
The text "Der in div." cannot be translated without further context. It's an incomplete sentence fragment. The oil filter shown in the pictures and videos is not actually present in this DSG transmission.
Let's see what the workshop says.
Best regards from Munich!

With the 6-speed DSG, they only managed to get through the filter because it involves wet clutches. The oil change was also interesting to me (I don't have much experience with transmissions). The fill plug is also the drain plug. Behind this plug, there's a plastic tube screwed in. This tube also needs to be removed so that the used oil can drain from the transmission. Then, new oil is added through the same opening, which fills the transmission. Subsequently, with the operating temperature reached and the engine running, the tube essentially indicates the fuel level.
To the best of my knowledge, with the 7-speed transmission, the hydraulic circuit cannot be drained and refilled while the transmission is still attached to the engine... that's the nature of the lifetime fill. At least the actual transmission fluid can be changed, but that probably won't improve things in your case... so it's likely going to require some work.

Bingo, and the Prussians too!
It's worth a try, the new mechatronics course costs just under âŹ2,000! Make sure to attach various funnels with extension hoses to it.

Hello everyone!
Yes, the prices... But it could also be even worse .
First of all, I want to express my sincere gratitude again for the helpful tips - I can't thank you enough!
Here's a quick update on the matter:
Last Wednesday, we were together at a northern branch of the well-known Munich-based VAG fast-food chain, where the sign outside said "Skoda" and the car used to be brand new.
My acquaintance initially didn't want to, because she had developed allergies against the association, but she eventually agreed after I explained my reasoning.
Okay, the staff at that establishment were incredibly rude â they have absolutely no manners, and certainly less class than the people working at McKotz behind the counter *thinking out loud*.
The problem was briefly described and acknowledged with indifference. Of course, I had the VCDS printout, or Autoscan, with me to help narrow down the problem as much as possible.
The documents were pushed aside with the words "...I'm not interested..." (direct quote!!!), and from that point on, it was essentially impossible to have a normal conversation with the person.
I would also like to know if the current repair manual (RLF) describes an oil change for the mechatronics unit, and furthermore, whether they would still perform a hydraulic oil change at a customer's request, even if it is not described in the manual (as mentioned above!).
As expected, he didn't want to check the owner's manual (RLF) and continued to say that if it wasn't described that way or differently in the owner's manual, they wouldn't perform an oil change. Not even if the customer wanted it, despite everything!
Apparently, what was much more important to Mr. was the acceptance of the already signed repair order, and whether the car could be washed, whether there were any valuables inside, etc.
We definitely need to perform some troubleshooting, guided if necessary, and then we can proceed.
Upon my inquiry, I received the response: "That could cost around 200 euros!"
...and here, at this point, AGAIN my main reason for using VCDS
Okay, so you pay around 200 euros to plug it in and look silly while doing it. Okay, here's the translation:
"Without breakdowns!"
(I've personally experienced this with a VAT update on a T5: 5 minutes of clicking, 1 hour of waiting - without any staff involvement: 130 euros!) Neija...)
On Friday, I'll give you a call. Information: The mechatronics system is broken.
Really? Incredible
They've never experienced anything like that before... (Why doesn't lightning strike them when they make such statements?!!)
We are attempting to file a goodwill request regarding the vehicle. We are awaiting a response, and the car must remain at the facility over the weekend.
Alleged response from Skoda: 100% parts, 0% labor.
Okay, my advice: Just do it.
Today, she picked up the Octavia again, and she received no receipt and didn't have to pay anything â for now. On the way home, of course, it still experienced the intermittent jerking as before.
Whether anything was actually done or whether a learning cycle was simply not initiated... it's unclear. Not yet!
Given that there are absolutely no new or different reported instances of driving behavior deficiencies, I'm inclined to believe the former.
If I happen to be in the area sometime, I'll do another car scan and keep you updated here.
Best regards from Munich!

"Auto must stay functional over the weekend" sounds more like an emergency room visit and empty departments . Whereas, no bill with presumably no work would represent a rather positive correlation. Usually, for them, no work doesn't correlate with a high bill and possibly more errors than before. You probably marked the oil filler cap somehow beforehand, didn't you?

Hello everyone!
Yes, not only did Mr. Kaufmann experience déjà vu, and my acquaintance immediately said after the initial acceptance of the vehicle: "Now I know why I don't like coming here!!"
As a helpful addition, it should be noted that the mileage reading on the odometer changed exactly by NUHUULL kilometers before and after the repair.
(I have to check again to see if the car was even still in the same spot where she had parked it ).
Generally, I don't like working on other people's cars, and even less so on the cars of acquaintances or friends - for reasons .
In this case, I didn't want to make things worse, and I certainly didn't want to jeopardize the possibility of a generous resolution.
Therefore, I have not disassembled or marked anything so far.
I will report .

Hello everyone!
And now, here's the big reveal regarding the case:
LZ wrote: | | Game protection means that there is always a system pressure that prevails to keep the two pistons at a defined point. Although a pressure accumulator is installed in the mechatronics unit, it won't last forever. ... |
That's exactly right!
I took some time this evening to look over the Octavia again.
Mechatronics is new, or rather, brand new.
I'm skipping the full system scan again, but the hardware part number is the same. The software part number has changed to: 0AM 300 058 Q, and the software version is now: (431) 6203. Finally, a different Vehicle Specific Code (WSC) is now applied.
By the way, I checked the extended ID: Mechatronics was created in 11/2015 and has been programmed twice so far.
So, contrary to initial assumptions, it turns out she was swapped out after all!
I don't know how the "0km learning drive" works, but you don't have to know everything to the point of exhaustion .
Things are about to get really interesting with the newly implemented logging system!
In the recording provided, it is clearly visible that the hydraulic pump was running CONSTANTLY WITHOUT INTERRUPTION. Due to my lack of experience, I initially considered this to be abnormal, and the continuous feedback from the motor control units (indicating a continuous adjustment of the target/actual speed) led me to conclude that it was a continuous regulation system, and not a "controlled" system.
In SSP No. 390, on page 40, top, a single subordinate clause mentions that the GeStG system controls the hydraulic pump on and off based on pressure.
Okay, I didn't think much about it here either, because in a standard operating procedure (SOP), details are rarely included, and everything is usually described in a schematic way. Incidentally, in the SSP document, the filling volume for Mechatronics is stated as both 1.1L and 1.0L, which is contradictory. ...so it's all approximate & it will probably be fine .
Actually, the hydraulic pump only runs at ONE speed of 2,200 RPM and is switched on or off depending on the pressure.
(originally, a technical step backward using a three-phase motor, which anyway has to be driven by a frequency converter (circuit), but I didn't study... you know ).
Here as well, there's a pressure reading of 1 with 60 bar, which is likely the maximum pressure (SSP indicates 70 bar...), and it's a fixed value. "Pressure 2," on the other hand, appears to be the minimum pressure and is variably specified by the GeStG (depending on the required coupling pressure/load situation?), but never below 42 bar.
In the first log, these 42 bar were partially undercut in the actual pressure, and it is unlikely that values exceeding 45 bar were reached - all while the hydraulic pump was running CONSTANTLY! The electricity supply was also quite limited compared to what it is now...
With modern mechatronics, the hydraulic pump only runs for a short time, builds up the maximum pressure, and then is completely shut off for approximately 10-30 seconds: the setpoint/actual speed is zero.
The pressure here decreases more or less slowly towards "Pressure 2", which then triggers short activations (approximately 1-2 seconds) of the pump.
Findings regarding this case:
Either the oil level in the mechatronic unit was too low, causing the pump to also draw in air (which explains the continuous operation and lower power consumption!), or there was a leak in the hydraulic circuit, such as a faulty valve, cylinder, seal, or membrane.
One will have to die ignorant here, despite philosophy.
I'll keep that in mind, and I'll occasionally take the car out for a test drive every few months to document any potential wear and tear.
Insights from various online sources, including MotorBlöd & Co.:
All garbage and pretentious nonsense!!!
...and I had really read a lot, a lot, a lot about it, because my acquaintance is really a sweet person and it's definitely worth .
Not a single post from HalbSchlaubie's described the definitive on/off switching of the hydraulic pump, nor the continuous pressure drop over time during operation, in relation to the control of the hydraulic pump. It was always just talk about "...you need to check this...the pressure should be at least 45 bar...*blah blah*" and that is SO absolutely WRONG!
It is correct that the pressure is ALWAYS in the range of 42-60 bar, with occasional overshoots. It can be temporarily requested to be different by the relevant authority (GeStG) if needed, and it is ALWAYS charged up to 60 bar, as there is a pressure accumulator present.
Ultimately, for troubleshooting, the key factors are the maximum pressure reached (TARGET: 60 bar! and nothing else!!), the time it takes for the pressure to drop below the minimum level after the pump is switched off (approximately 20-30 seconds, depending on the switching and coupling requirements), and, not least, that the pump is only activated for very short periods.
The longer this hydraulic pump has to run under pressure, the greater the problem it causes in the DSG (Dual Clutch System).
For reference, please see the attached log file. If I had had such information before, ... exactly
And finally, a heartfelt thank you once again to our QuotenĂsi LiZ, who was absolutely right with his prediction! (I can't give more than one thumbs up, sorry ).
Why VAG chose to implement "game protection" despite the existing and quite extensive error messages remains a mystery, but well...
Perhaps to try to discourage people like me from doing it?
"Spielschutz" is described in English-speaking VAG forums as "play protection," for example, referring to the constant raising and lowering of windows, which is essentially an "overload protection" feature (caused by careless users and/or improper use)!
"Therefore, the large plan..." I felt lost at first, reading something like that in the Data Protection Act.
Many thanks again to everyone .
Should anything significantly new develop, I will post more information here again .
Best regards from Munich!
