Hello, we have an AUDI A3 with a 2.0L engine (110kW CRB) that occasionally overheats, reaching 120 degrees Celsius before returning to normal. It then runs normally for a while before the problem repeats. The coolant thermostat has already been replaced.

Does anyone have any ideas?

In some water pumps, it has happened that the impeller detached from the shaft. In such cases, the pump may spin freely, but very little or no water is actually being pumped.

Is there a certain pattern or system to it, so that you can, for example, trigger it by driving at full throttle on the highway?

Thank you both. I'm ruling out a leak in the head gasket because there's absolutely no water consumption. However, a water pump could be the issue, but I find it hard to believe that we're still having the same problems as we did back in the 90s – have they really learned nothing? I'll replace the water pump next. Our mechanic actually has one in stock, so there must be a reason for that.

Unfortunately, this is very late, but I'm not exactly an internet expert. The problem was with the water pump, specifically a sliding sleeve located above the impeller. This sleeve is controlled by a valve and water pressure, and it moves backward to open the circuit. However, this sliding sleeve got stuck.
