It's about my Sharan 7N. The owner's manual states that you should wait for a message to appear in the FIS (multifunction display) and then add at least 10 liters of fuel.

Since we are going on vacation for New Year's Eve, I would like to refill the AdBlue before the trip. Recently, I checked the level using VCDS, and it showed a remaining range of 3500 km.

Now, my question is:
Do I absolutely have to wait until the notification appears in the FIS system, or can I also refuel in the meantime?
Viele Grüße
Andreas

Do you think that Volkswagen generally handles this topic differently than topics like fuel or oil reserves?

I have a Tiguan in my customer base, and I've done this many times before, especially before vacation trips; it's really not a problem. icon_wink.gif

I'm just wondering why that's explicitly stated in the instructions, because I don't understand the logic behind it, and I'd like to know the reason.

Thank you for the confirmation. Does it matter how much is refilled? I am referring to the statement that at least 10 liters should be refilled.

The statement about the 10-liter threshold after the light illuminates is purely for safety. It ensures that there is absolutely no risk of overfilling and, consequently, no contact with AdBlue.

I have also put significantly more than 10 liters into that Tiguan before, and I haven't had any problems so far. And of course, it doesn't matter whether you add 1 liter or 10 liters (as long as it fits). icon_wink.gif

I'm doing the same thing with my Sharan. The background from VW is simply that there's no continuous measurement, only three level measurements.

Therefore, when the first reading comes in, you need to replenish a certain amount to ensure it falls within the operational range for the next level reading. The entire process is so slow that even when a notification is imminent, it takes a considerable amount of time for the warning to appear. Also, when the warning does appear, it can sometimes happen quite suddenly (the distance can drop from 2500 km to 1900 km after just three turns).

Simply refill, bring some cloths, and use the nozzle in "batches." The Sharan tends to "burp" when filling with AdBlue.

Thank you for your answers. It will be my first time icon_lol.gif.

I bought this blue adapter from Amarok. It has a magnetic ring, which allows me to fill up AdBlue at the truck fuel pump for 0.499 cents per liter.

I will report.

The adapter releases the nozzle (magnet). The Sharan has a very narrow fuel filler neck. Not every nozzle fits. We have a truck fuel station here with a nozzle that has no safety features, and which can also be used to fill canisters. After an initial experience (you're brave icon_wink.gif), I now only refuel using a small hose as a vent. I insert this hose about 30cm into the fuel filler neck beforehand, then I maneuver the nozzle into place, press a cloth around the opening, and let the fueling begin. The genius who planned the VW internal operating supplies probably only knew about the company's own 1-liter bottles. People can use those if they want, given the prices, but with a little thought, you can get it "from the tank" at a truck fuel station. I recently (in August) paid 42.9 cents, although afterwards, about 500ml was definitely stuck in the cloth that was disposed of on the spot. icon_smile.gif

Given the price, the few drops are negligible. icon_cool.gif

Here in the Rhine-Main area, 49.9 cents per liter is already the lower limit. icon_evil.gif

I recall that, in (some?) Audis, the amount of fuel added during a night refueling was less than 5 liters.

That's correct; Audi specifies a value of 7 liters to detect the overnight charging process.

As I mentioned, the reason is that there's no continuous level measurement. Depending on the vehicle and tank size, when you receive a warning while waiting in line, you have to refuel enough so that the next contact point is "overfilled." The simplest and most sensible approach is to just fill it up completely. Don't overthink it.

I filled up the tank today. It took less than 60 seconds with the VW adapter to fill 12.4 liters without wasting a single drop.

I highly recommend this adapter. It works perfectly and reliably.
