Hello,
I need to remove the transmission from our old Volkswagen Golf III with the AHU engine code.
Since I've already done this twice and couldn't stop myself from cursing each time, I'd like to ask if it's possible to simply unscrew the two flanges of the drive shafts without any risk to the differential (knowing full well that they will come loose, of course). These parts are just in the way everywhere during the gearbox installation. Of course, the flanges would be installed with new seals.
Best regards and thank you.

Jens.

Of course, there's nothing against it, and it really makes things much easier. icon_wink.gif

Normally, that would be enough, but I was also thinking about disassembling the internal components, specifically for the right shaft.

Hi,
Thank you for your help. Yesterday, I removed the transmission from our old Golf right in front of the garage. I had already detached both flanges beforehand. It was almost a "walk in the park" – no turning, no tearing, no jerking. The transmission practically slid out on its own. I'm hopeful that the installation will be just as easy.

Regards,
Jens.

I considered doing something similar years ago, but the potential for oil spills and possible problems with re-installing the stubs discouraged me.

Okay, if the flanges need to be removed, you have to drain the transmission oil first. You probably won't find the necessary 17mm Allen key in your toolbox. The flanges were reinstalled immediately after removing the transmission. When tightening the mounting screws, you have to press against a spring that sits on the flange. I will report on the installation process.

Regards,
Jens.

I've already had enough problems with these axle bearings when they have to be removed due to leaks, so I wouldn't do it voluntarily. Using a gearbox jack and lift table, it works relatively well on my own, although for me, installation is always easier than removal.

Hello,
The gearbox is now back in place. There was no hassle during the installation either; no twisting, jerking, or other awkward maneuvers. I would only recommend removing the flanges.

Regards,
Jens.
