Hello everyone,

My front windshield wipers stopped working today - of all days, when it's raining!

The fuses are not blown. I then checked using VCDS, which showed me the data blocks. The measured values correctly indicate the position of the wiper lever switch.

However, when I measure the voltage at the four wires on the wiper motor connector, I get readings of 6V and 4.5V – regardless of which setting the wiper lever is in.

Do you have any ideas about what might be causing this, or what I should check next?

Since there are many different Polo models and I'm not familiar with yours, could you please confirm that all the fuses for the windshield wiper system are okay? Are there any other unusual symptoms that might indicate problems with the wiring harness or connectors? Also, does the hood release mechanism have a contact switch that is functioning correctly?

Just a few ideas.

Which car are we talking about? Does the windshield wiper not work at all, or is it just twitching? Is the windshield washer system working?

In principle, I see the following potential sources of error:

# Wiper motor - in this case, the problem is more likely with the joints.
# Wiring
# Wiper lever, also steering column switch.
# Fuse/relay (if applicable)
# Control unit, if responsible.
Viele Grüße
Andreas

Good morning, Stolleey.

Could you please tell us which specific models of the "Polo" car series are being referred to in this context? (Autoscan)

It would be helpful to know whether the Polo has a dedicated wiper relay or if the Body Control Module (BCM) functions as the relay.

Do you not have any error entries?

What have you already checked?

Do the measurement blocks fit in VCDS?

In older Polo models, green corrosion often accumulates on the wiper motor connector. (This happens when the drain in the water reservoir is blocked.)

Check the fuses (remove them for a visual inspection!), including the fuse for the pump of the windshield washer nozzles! (In very old cars, this could also cause the wipers to stop working.)

2. Check the relays.

3. Check the hood contact switch.

3. Check the pins on the BNS (Baseboard Network Switch).

4. Check the green wire on the wiper motor connector for corrosion, and with the connector plugged in, try activating the wipers and perform a voltage measurement.

ATTENTION!!! Make sure to close the hood's contact switch! Otherwise, you will get garbage readings.icon_smile.gif

5. Perform the voltage drop measurement on the mass side.

Perhaps you could make it a little easier for us by providing a scan icon_smile.gif.

Waved.

Hi there,
It is likely that the vehicle in question is the Polo 9N3 with a 1.4L TDI engine, as previously mentioned by Stolley in earlier posts.
One topic from October 2019.
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.

Okay, Herbert...

Perhaps the question will resolve itself anyway, or it's a case for revisiting an older topic. I'm increasingly noticing that we're just repeating ourselves here. It seems like there's already information written about almost every defect, unfortunately often multiple times.

Here, of course, is the hammer passing through the circle icon_wink.gif.

Hello Stolley, thanks to Herbert, everyone now knows that you've been dealing with this problem for a while icon_smile.gif.

To be able to help you effectively, it's really helpful if you describe your problem in detail and mention what you have already tried and what hasn't worked.

An experienced VCDS user can do more with the Autoscan feature than just read error codes. Therefore, an Autoscan is also helpful even if there are no apparent errors stored.

Now, let's get back to your POLO windshield wipers.

If I understand your explanation, including your previous post, correctly, the wiper started working again after you sprayed the connector on the wiper motor. It then worked flawlessly for months, and now it's stopped working again?

Please repeat your measurement at the connector of the wiper motor. Remember to check switch F266 (under the hood).

1.) You measure the voltage between pin 1 and pin 4, and also the voltage between pin 2 and pin 4.
(Were you getting 5 volts here?)

2.) Now, measure pin 1 and pin 2 against the ground (or common).
Vehicle battery.

If you are now measuring a higher voltage, you have a grounding problem.

Step 3 & 4: Voltage Drop Measurement.
(Connector for wiper motor is connected / Wiper is activated)

Okay, now connect pin 4 to ground at the battery terminal.

4. Connect pin 1 + 2 to terminal 30 of the battery.

Ideally, measurements 1 and 2 should result in a voltage of 12 volts. Measurements 3 and 4 should be close to 0.

What values are you determining here?

The wiper motor obtains the vehicle mass information via the connector on the left side of the fan housing.

If you observe no differences in any of the measurements and you continue to only measure 4 volts, ...

... then you may proceed to the BNS.

Kannst Du das Relais klacken hören ? Sure, I can help you with that. Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.

Here, you should find the 5-pin connector with the same cable colors as those you see on the wiper motor and then perform another voltage measurement.

What is the voltage here? Does the voltage change when you tap the screwdriver handle against the PCB (printed circuit board)? (Possible cold solder joint on the relay).

If you are also only measuring 4 volts here, you can assume that the main negative bus (BNS) is defective.

Then you can try powering the wiper motor directly with a separate 12-volt source to see if it works.

Around the year 2008, there was a significant number of faulty battery management systems (BMS). The index from your BMS would be helpful in this regard.

If the relay is the cause, you would need to purchase a new BNS (Battery Negative Sensor) for just a few euros.

I wish you good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing your results.

Waved.
