Hello everyone.

I have a big problem that happened because of my own stupidity. It's embarrassing, but here it is.

I want to replace the brake pads on my Audi with the electronic parking brake.

The following happened: I started the service using VCDS, and everything was fine up to that point.

After a 1-hour lunch break, I noticed that the brake piston was protruding quite far out.

Unfortunately, I seem to have pushed the brake caliper piston out.
Unfortunately, on that day, I hadn't paid attention to the fact that the onboard voltage needed to be sufficient.
A second mistake on my part. The battery and the car's electrical system are fully charged, and the car is also connected to a charger.

Now, I'm getting the error "Electronic motor, unknown position" in VCDS.

In this situation, could you say the same thing as when you're replacing a brake caliper?

Are the steps correct?

Remove the piston and rubber.
Screw the brake piston rod into the thread until it stops?
verschandeln the rubber.
Reinstall the piston with the rubber part, pushing it back in?
VCDS??

In the VCDS basic settings, when you first try to reset all values to their default settings or adapt them, a pop-up window appears as a warning.

Activating or deactivating the "Menu Brake Service" again didn't work because the engine had lost its position.

I have mechanically pushed the piston all the way in, according to the Erwin (siehe Fehlerdatenbank) manual that I have.
Is that position 0?
Now, I would like the brake caliper to relearn its basic settings, including with the old brake pads still installed.

Does anyone know the steps involved in using VCDS?

For information.
I am using VCDS version 23.11.0.
I'm currently 600km away from the car. If a fault code is absolutely necessary, what should I do?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Piet,
It would be best if you could specify the vehicle and brake type exactly.
Do not force the brake pistons back in; doing so will damage the parking brake mechanism.
If the piston could be easily pushed back in, it was likely that some residual pressure had caused brake fluid to leak out.
Can the brake pads with the linings be fitted onto the discs? If yes, assemble the brake, attach the wheels, and use VCDS to perform the basic settings for the EPB (Electronic Parking Brake). If not, I wouldn't remove the piston, but rather the parking brake motor. Then, using a Torx bit, turn the adjustment screw back as far as possible until the pressure nut in the piston is free, allowing the piston to be pushed back further. You can find the details in your RLF (from ERWIN).
Then reassemble everything, depress the brake pedal until the pads engage, and perform the basic calibration of the EPB (likely STG53, parking brake: basic calibration).

It is an AUDI 2017/5 F53 RS with brake type 1LM/1LX/1LY/1LZ. Vehicle Identification Number: WUAZZZF59JA900186.
I will be there again on Friday.
"There's something about a TX45 key in the Erwin (siehe Fehlerdatenbank) system, but in this case, it's a multi-tooth key with a unique size (where the actuator motor is located)."
Inside, there's a reversed thread where the pressure bolt is located (screwed in all the way).
"You can simply screw this in easily. And then I pushed the piston with the rubber piece in, and it went in very smoothly."

You're absolutely right. The residual pressure probably forced something out of it.
Perform the initial setup of the EPB (Electronic Parking Brake).

That's exactly what I hope to find in the default settings.
One line was about all the learning values.

I'm not sure, but should I bleed the system before connecting the new device, or would that be advisable?

I will report on Friday. Thank you.

Hi Piet,
In VCDS, you should see an image similar to the one shown here (from an A4 8K) when accessing the EPB control module (module 53) in the basic settings mode.
Clear the error in the control unit, unlock the access permission, and then, in either the basic settings mode with the pad replacement mode (and then "exit") or the commissioning mode, activate the motors.
The end positions are only detected by the increasing current draw.
Here, too, there is information available:
An external charger is not part of the original Audi design, but it can eliminate waiting times before disconnecting the charging cable.

Hello Herbert.

That's exactly where your picture was. I had the basic settings perfect the first time, until I made a mistake.

I wasn't able to delete the unknown position error because after deleting it, a popup appears with a message about session refresh or something like that... Hmm, I'll investigate this further.

It's possible there's still an ABS error, likely because the cable was disconnected. I will delete this.
I will ensure that there is a minimum waiting time of 30 seconds before disconnecting the power.

What I also wanted to ask is about the venting process.
Now that the piston has been removed, there's definitely still air trapped inside.
Should this step be vented only after the fact, or before we make the initial adjustment?

I will report to Herbert on Friday evening. Thank you very much.
Best regards, Piet77.

Hi,
I don't quite understand it. Were the pistons completely out of the cylinder (seal), or were they only pushed out far, but still held by the seal?
1LM, 1LX, 1LY, and 1LZ are possible brake types for the front. You installed a different version of that.

I think we're at a point where I'm telling you that, for safety reasons, you should avoid touching the brakes because you don't understand how they work.

My advice would be to get the self-study program about the brakes installed in your car and have a qualified mechanic finish the work you've started.

Actually, you're right, it's supposed to be in the front. The Erwin (siehe Fehlerdatenbank) manual says to refer to the picture, which would indicate 1LX in the rear and 1KR in the front for me.
according to BILD.

Hello Herbert.
Completely out of sync. Passenger side.
Did I write that I cleaned the rubber, attached it to the piston, screwed in the pressure bolt, and then pushed the brake piston in? Everything is now installed and connected. The FBMotor made a noise when the ignition was turned on, so it seems to be working correctly.
Unfortunately, these errors cannot be easily deleted.
Restarted session, and the errors are back.

I still need to check if any fuses have blown.
"The reason is that I'm getting a large number of errors related to ABS."
I suspect that when I activated the parking brake service mode last week, the battery was weak, and that caused the charger fuse to blow due to overload. But that makes sense again, at least.
I'm at the car now. I'm going to perform a bleed now.

I can provide logs if needed.

Best regards,
Peter

Update.

The brake has an error code indicating an unknown position.
"It's gone. The brake is working again, as it should, after bleeding."
Now I just need to fix the errors that were caused by this.
This now includes ABS/ESC stabilizer control and a sport differential, see file.
Unfortunately, it's still open.
I hope I don't have to go for a ride now just to get rid of them. What worries me the most is the mass error.
that you can't get rid of.

Front left speed sensor.
C0502 00 [10100101] - Short circuit to ground.

You need to know if you were involved. Possibly. Delete it and see if it reappears.

I will check the voltage tomorrow (the fuses are all okay), as I measured 12.15 volts with the charger. When I started the engine, it showed 14.01 volts.
The Varta battery, which is 8 years old, may also need to be replaced soon.

Since I'm experiencing some issues after replacing the pads, can someone help me?
Sure, I can help with that. Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
ABS.
Sport differential.
Brake electronics (speed sensor).
"Auto headlights (I can't find this error in VCDS), but according to VCDS, the 'A' setting is no longer present in the high beam settings."
Address 13: Distance control (J428)) Label file: * Bypass failed! possibly this.

I suspect the on-board voltage is too low.

Best regards,
Peter.

The sensor was not connected.
It looks like I might be starting to get Alzheimer's at the age of 47.
The brake pads have now been installed.
All errors have disappeared; they were manually deleted, and no error code has reappeared.

Do pop-up ads related to "Register" have anything to do with licensing?

Thank you everyone.

I'm talking about the VCDS tool.
Since I bought the new HEXdongle, I sometimes get these kinds of messages.

"Does 'Register uses 8...' have anything to do with licensing?"
I can send you the photo next week if needed.
