Hello, As a precaution during the timing belt replacement (A3 TDI ALH, 90 hp, year 2001), I also replaced the water pump.
My question is about filling the cooling circuit. Is there a trick to it? Because bleeding air through the open expansion tank while the heating is on takes forever until the fan turns on and the cooling circuit is fully bled. Is there a faster way to do this (using DIY methods)? Best regards.

Hi,

If you've filled it sufficiently, you can carefully (and without turning on the heater!) warm it up. But pay attention to the coolant warning indicator and it's better to bring some water with you. This is the fastest way to warm it up. When the thermostat opens, the coolant level in the expansion tank will suddenly drop. Then you can fill it above the "Max" mark. Warning: Depending on the driving time, there may be a risk of scalding when opening the cap!

Increasing the heating setting is unlikely to have any effect on air-controlled heating systems; it will only cause them to heat up more slowly.

With the lid open, the heater on, and the machine idling, you could literally wait forever...
