Hello, I'm having the following problem with my Golf 2 GTD, engine code: SB.

The temperature rises to almost 3/4 of the gauge while driving, which seems high, as it should ideally stay at half. When I stop with the engine running, it goes down to around half. Does anyone have any ideas what might be broken?

Parts I have already installed:

Thermostat and water pump.

Could it possibly be the cooker?

Thank you very much in advance!

Evening.
Was there ever any oil leakage into the cooling system in this vehicle?

Best regards, Robert.

I don't know, I've only had the car for about 6 months! Why?

It's quite possible. I've never had this problem with the radiator being clogged with limescale before, but the water in the Black Forest isn't as hard as it is with you Swabians icon_wink.gif.
What made a noticeable difference for my Golf was rinsing the radiator fins with water. You just have to be careful not to bend the fins with a high-pressure washer, so it's better to use a garden hose with good pressure. If necessary, you can also use compressed air. Simply spray from the engine compartment towards the front.
Otherwise, have fun with the scooter; it's fast and almost indestructible icon_smile.gif.

Best regards, Uli (with 480,000 km on the first head gasket in this car).

Hello,
Oil in the cooling fins of the radiator hinders heat exchange; you could colloquially refer to it as clogged channels.

Best regards, Robert.

Thanks to you all! I have another question.
How can I increase the boost pressure a little? Do I need to turn the rod inwards or outwards?

Sorry to ask again, but I couldn't find anything.

Do I need to turn the threaded rod towards the can or towards the turbo?

Hello,

What's causing the temperature problem? Is the fuel injection pump misadjusted?

Best regards, Rainer.

Okay, I've now replaced the radiator, but the temperature is still the same! Almost only cold air is coming out of the heating system.

Hi!
Based on my own experience with an 84 Jetta, I can only say that the temperature gauge was never particularly accurate. It would often fluctuate up to 3/4 full, even in city driving (and in winter!), but would also sometimes drop a bit even on a straight road. And they weren't "calibrated" in any standard way; on one car, a larger fluctuation was normal, while on another, it was a bit less. They were just simple bi-metal gauges.
Regarding your heating problem, I would check if your car was also retrofitted with this bypass for the heat exchanger back then (it was a major recall campaign). Over the years, these components can fail and permanently open the heat exchanger bypass, which can result in the heating system barely working.

Okay, I've now replaced the radiator, but it's still not working! During normal driving, the temperature gauge almost reaches 3/4, but when I drive at high speeds, like 160 km/h, it drops down to halfway. The heater only gets a little warm on the first setting, and almost nothing on the second setting. Could the heater core be clogged?

Happy New Year to everyone!

Best regards, Daniel.

Hi, your descriptions sound very familiar to me icon_sad.gif.
Denk mal das es die Kopfdichtung am 3. oder 4. Cylinder.
caught and directed exhaust gases into the cooling system.
It's under pressure, which is why the heating system isn't working anymore.
Since the gases and water are pushing outwards, pay attention to the following signs:

- White smoke when starting (from the exhaust and in the expansion tank).
- Black deposits in the surge tank (soot).
-Pressure in the cooling system (can also damage the water pump).
- Water consumption

It came on very gradually for me, but then it suddenly got much worse.
(Water consumption)

If that's not the problem, perhaps the heat exchanger in the heating system is blocked.
(also crap, removing the dashboard...)

Have fun screwing! icon_smile.gif

Best regards,
michael

Golf2 diesel cars produced up to and including 1990 are eligible for a free replacement heat exchanger from VW for life, as the original one may become leaky or defective.

You can have the dealer check the product using the serial number, but be careful, as some dealers may be unwilling to do so and may wrongly refuse a replacement. -> Call another dealer!

Could it be that the system isn't properly bled, and there's still an air bubble in the heat exchanger? Try opening the return line from the heat exchanger in the engine compartment and check if air is coming out, or if it's already coolant.

@Kühler:

The Golf can become very temperature-stable; to achieve this, use the radiator from a Golf 1 diesel. It's almost twice as thick and helps maintain a constant temperature for the Golf 2 diesel.

Hi!
Regarding the recall or goodwill replacement of the water pump, I have to disappoint you. While there was indeed a campaign by Volkswagen where faulty water pumps were replaced free of charge, that campaign has been discontinued for years. That's what they told me directly when I inquired with Volkswagen at the time. This was related to a VW Jetta 1.3 gasoline model. Has the bypass been examined yet (if it's even installed)?

Hi!
This action has been expired for years.

Just 4 months ago, someone sent a Golf 2 D to the VW dealership. icon_smile.gif However, I must also mention that only the third VW dealer remembered this 'lifetime' warranty. }
