Hi again,
Yes, I will check the wiring.
But I have another question about pins 6 and 14. Should I measure against the mass or against 6 versus 14?
Thank you for your help.
Best regards,
Carsten.

No. The control unit shown in the image is the engine control unit.
The gateway is definitely located inside.
You can purchase a limited-time access to technical documentation from Skoda (similar to VW's "Erwin" system, possibly with a different name at Skoda). This allows you to view wiring diagrams, component locations, and disassembly instructions (and print them as PDFs), specifically for your vehicle. This will show you which pins the CAN lines are connected to on the gateway, and where the gateway is located.
Then, measure the CAN-L line from the diagnostic connector to the gateway connector, and do the same for the CAN-H line (but not against ground). Not against each other).

Hello,
The rain has stopped. So, go ahead and check your information. Gateway found, and CAN high (19) and CAN low (9) cables verified. They are fine.
Can I somehow test the gateway, or should I order a used one?
As always, thank you very much for your help.
Regards,
Carsten.

Hello,
So, CAN lines each have a connection to the pin on the connector, but there is no short circuit between them?
If so: If you find a cheaper replacement, I would simply order a new gateway. Repairing it will be difficult without further electronics knowledge, and it may not be worth the time and cost.
It is important to have the exact VAG part number, including the letters at the end.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,
I measured the CAN high (pin 6 on the OBD2 connector) and CAN low (pin 14 on the OBD2 connector) lines to the gateway (pins 9 and 19). Of course, I did this with my limited knowledge. The connections are continuous up to the gateway, and they are not connected to each other. Or do I also need to test all the cables of the gateway?
Yes, I can get something like that from a scrapyard here in Norway for about 60 euros. I've already requested a similar gateway. It's not the same year of manufacture, but it has the exact same part number, including the letters. Let's see if this makes a difference!
Definitely, a huge thank you for the help!
Best regards,
Carsten.

Hi Carsten,
CAN is relevant for communication. Presumably, the gateway will receive power. I'm not sure if the car would even start without it, but there are definitely a lot of error messages.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hello,
Okay, so now a used gateway is installed, and it has the same number. Unfortunately, there is no improvement.
Perhaps it's a bit too high for me. I need to try measuring the gateway. I'm not sure about the layout yet. Does anyone have any information about that? "Or can I find something like that in Erwin?"
Maybe someone else has some tips!
Thank you very much.
Carsten.

Hello,
It's actually quite simple. Really.
Regardless of whether there's anything else wrong, the gateway must be reachable via CAN at address 19.
The diagnostic CAN lines must be connected to the diagnostic cable, and the gateway must be powered. Have you already replaced the fuse?
One possibility is that the gateway you have installed is prone to failure, and your replacement is also faulty.
You can test it with the old gateway outside the car, get the wiring diagram, and provide power to it. CAN to diagnostic cable.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,
After taking a break for health reasons, I would like to continue working on the Skoda project.
I'm trying to get the wiring diagram from Erwin (siehe Fehlerdatenbank) tomorrow. I think I understand how to measure the CAN bus box now. I need to power up the box and connect the Can h and l lines to the vcds interface.
"Regarding the fuse. I've checked all the fuses, but I haven't replaced any. Which specific fuse is it for the CAN bus?" I can't find anything online.
Best regards,
Carsten.

Hello,
I connected the CAN gateway as shown in the video, and it's working.
As Rainer mentioned, it can only be a cable or an electrical problem, right?
Unfortunately, I locked myself out of the car. Probably a beginner's mistake. The key was inside the car, and we were trying to get it into the garage. It's an automatic car. So, I connected the battery to the key that was inside the car. What happened? The Skoda automatically locked itself. It's probably because the key's battery is dead, right? Now I need to find the second key. Then it continues.
Best regards,
Carsten.

Often, the pins in the diagnostic connector (CAN or others) slip backward, which prevents diagnostic communication.
Now that you know the pin for the power supply of the gateway, you should check the connector in the car to see if there is actually any voltage present. "A good ground connection is also necessary (equal to the potential of the battery's negative terminal or the car body in a VW)."
Good luck!

Hey,
The gateway has a connection to pin 1 and pin 14, which are connected to positive voltage, and a connection to pin 11, which is connected to ground.
I watched the following video. https://youtu.be/W-e7eT91DrQ?si=iQZuF-qWapthn-nq
I understand, but I don't know what "can high" and "can low" refer to, and what values (2.6V and 2.4V respectively) they should have. He also describes what happens when he measures the ports against ground.
What is he measuring with the CAN channels?
Best regards,
Carsten.

Hello,
Here's a quick update and a question.
Okay, so the 12V and ground connections are fine at both the gateway and the OBD2. The CAN-H and CAN-L lines are connected, but not providing any values. Rainer suspects that one of the cables might be making contact with ground. I tried to trace the cables, but it's impossible to reach them without removing the entire dashboard. So, my question is: Even though it's difficult to access the gateway connector, would it make sense to disconnect the CAN-L and CAN-H lines and run a new cable to the OBD2? Has anyone ever done something like that before?
Best regards,
Carsten.
