Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts,
The TÜV (German technical inspection agency) doesn't want to approve my wife's Audi A2 (1.4L gasoline engine, 75 hp) . The rear drum brakes are uneven, the handbrake cables are worn, and the brake cylinders are leaking. Since I'm not a big fan of drum brakes, I've considered converting them to disc brakes from the 90 hp version. Has anyone done this before? Does this need to be registered? Does anything need to be adjusted in the ABS, wheel bearing assembly, rear axle, etc., besides new brake cables, brake lines, calipers, and caliper carriers? Are the drillings for attaching the brake caliper supports to the rear axle already available? ____________

The holes or mounting points for the saddle are present, but they are likely heavily corroded now. You can tell if there are still usable threads present when the wheel is removed.
Whether you need other parts like the HBZ (likely a specific component), you would need to check the parts catalog at your local dealership. Based on my understanding, there shouldn't be any differences.
On my wife's Ibiza 6L, I replaced the entire drum brake system this year, after it had reached approximately 160,000 km. This included the drums, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, and new adjusters. I do the job once and then I have peace of mind for the rest of the vehicle's lifespan.
On my old Polo 6R with disc brakes, I had to replace the wear parts on the rear axle three times in 95,000 km, despite using ventilated brakes and regularly engaging the handbrake. It was neither cheaper nor less time-consuming. |

Tip: Replace all the internal components of the drums, and you'll have peace of mind for the next few years. The rear disc brakes, on the other hand, will ultimately cause more trouble. Sommer: A4 B5 Avant 2,5 TDI Quattro Facelift (AKN silber)

I also think that the renovation would only be worthwhile if there was an interest in it for aesthetic reasons, and if it was something that someone would value.
Economically, it would definitely not be worthwhile. The conversion costs plus the subsequent costs are not even remotely proportional to the cost of completely overhauling the drum brakes twice, which, for a remaining useful life of, say, 6 years, will certainly not be necessary even once. Hi Rüdi,
That's how we do it. I'm not really getting much information from the A2 "Freunde" articles, especially regarding the registration of the new braking system (specifically in Hesse).
Are there any other things to be aware of when replacing the handbrake cables, besides the possibility of the nipples on the heat shields breaking off? I read somewhere that the mechanism between the handbrake lever and the handbrake itself often deteriorates, and that replacing it is extremely complicated (requiring removal of the center console, exhaust system, etc.). ____________
