P0401 Error: Low EGR Flow - Causes & Fixes (Solution)

Error code P0401: EGR flow insufficient (VAG group). Causes and diagnosis.

P0401 is one of the most common error codes in VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda diesel engines with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems. The engine control unit (ECU) reports that the expected decrease in air mass does not occur when the EGR valve is opened, meaning that the amount of exhaust gas being recirculated is too low. The most common cause in TDI engines is a clogged EGR valve.


What does P0401 mean?
The EGR valve recirculates a portion of the exhaust gas back into the intake manifold to reduce the combustion temperature and, consequently, the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The control unit monitors the function indirectly via the measured air mass (MAF sensor): When the EGR valve opens, the measured air mass should decrease. If this does not happen or not sufficiently, the error code P0401 (flow too low) is set. Therefore, the problem can be located in the EGR valve itself, the MAF sensor, or the vacuum supply.


Typical symptoms:
- Engine check light is on.
- Loss of performance, especially under partial load conditions.
- Jerky movement at low RPM.
- Increased fuel consumption.
- Increased NOx emissions.
- Often combined with P0101 (MAF sensor) or P0403 (electric EGR valve).


Most common causes:
- The EGR valve is carbonized and stuck (most common cause in TDI engines).
- EGR cooler clogged/blocked.
- Vacuum lines to the EGR valve are leaking or detached.
- AGR valve (N18) is defective or sticking.
- The mass airflow sensor is providing incorrect readings (too high air mass).
- Intake manifold leak.

Diagnosis with VCDS:
- Autoscan: P0401 code detected in the engine control unit (01 - Engine).
- Perform actuator diagnosis for the EGR valve (N18).
- Measurement block: Observe the EGR duty cycle and air mass - when the EGR valve opens, the air mass should decrease significantly.
- Remove the EGR valve and check for carbon buildup (image of carbon buildup).
- Check the vacuum system with a manual pump for leaks.
- Compare LMM values with target values (if necessary, also check P0101).
