Hello,

You wouldn't believe it, but the engine in a Sharan PD TDI 4Motion, manufactured in 2001, completely failed. icon_sad.gif Even though it had only been driven for about 200,000 km.

Due to the exorbitant prices for new VW ATMs (automatic transmission modules), it's now advisable to install a very good used engine. We haven't yet found an AUY engine that's already installed, but there are several ASZ options available.

Do you know how relevant the differences between the two engines are for a conversion? The new engine (or either of the engines) would come complete with turbocharger, wiring harness, oil pan, covers, etc., but without the engine control unit (ECU).

It wouldn't matter if the engine only had 115 horsepower instead of 130 due to the AUY control unit; the only annoying thing would be if, during installation, it turned out that something wasn't compatible, which, as you know, can be a hassle.

Best regards!

G.

It would certainly be interesting to find out the cause of death. Well, 200,000 km is quite a lot of mileage, but still, it's a shame and frustrating. There was just a thread about the engine control units for PD engines, you should check it out!
Is a partial repair not an option?

Hi,

AFAIK, the engines for the Sharan are different from the engines used in lighter VW vehicles.

A guy from Volkswagen once explained it to me like this:
"For example, the Sharan uses higher injection pressures to meet emission standards despite its high weight. This also explains the shorter maintenance intervals specifically recommended for the Sharan (due to higher timing belt stress)."

Therefore, I would strongly advise sticking with the original engine code to avoid potential discussions with the TÜV inspector regarding operating permits.

Once, a VW employee explained it to me like this:
'For example, the Sharan uses higher injection pressures to meet emission standards despite its high weight. This also explains the shorter maintenance intervals specifically recommended for the Sharan (due to higher wear on the timing belt).'

That wouldn't be entirely unreasonable; VAG actually does something similar in the automatic ALH engines (although without shortening the maintenance intervals).

Can you provide more input?

Hello everyone,

'It's interesting about the emissions values. If the only difference is the tuning, for example, between an AJM and an AUY engine, then installing, say, an AJM engine (which is another pump-injector engine with 115 hp) wouldn't be a problem.'

I would accept the risk that a TÜV inspector might uncover the modified engine control unit, and I would also accept the feeling of guilt if the engine emitted 2 ppm more NOx during the emissions test cycle.

The reason for the engine damage could be a hole in the piston. In TDI engines, this is often caused by a problem with the injector control valve of the third cylinder, right? But pump-nozzles don't have an injector control valve, do they?

I'm starting to realize that I've been away from this field for too long. Back when I was working in the workshop, I used to manually adjust the turbo diesel engines, and I would increase the boost pressure by adjusting the wastegate.

Are there perhaps more details available about the differences between the ASZ, AJM engines compared to the AUY? That information would be very helpful to me.

Hello!

G.

"But doesn't the injector pump have a needle lift adjuster?"

Okay, I understand. Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.

Hi,

As far as I know, the ASZ was also used in the Sharan. I'd also be interested to know which components, connections, brackets, control units, etc., would need to be replaced.
It is certain that you must consult with the building inspector and have the necessary approvals in place. Otherwise, your operating permit will be revoked.
If it's 'just' a seized piston, take the car to specialists (a motor repair shop); they will very likely be able to rebuild the engine.

Best regards, Ecki.

Then, be sure to replace the PD (plasma display) elements as well. Those components could be the cause of the problem.

Best regards, WarLord.

@sirecki:

Yes, that's also correct.
