Hello,
Unfortunately, the 6-speed gearbox in my T6 is leaking. It looks like it's coming from the oil seal of the left driveshaft, right next to the transmission.
Since there's a kit available for the bay that includes transmission oil and a sealing ring, I suspect this problem isn't particularly uncommon.
Can anyone comment on the effort involved? Remove the driveshaft, take out the shaft stub, remove the sealing ring, and that's it?
Best regards, Rainer.

Do you have a key number or a VIN? If so, I can look it up for you. Manual or automatic?

Hello Rainer,
I just checked again.
No surprises are expected.
- Disconnect the driveshaft.
- Loosen the axle joint.
- Driveshaft removed.
- Replace the sealing ring.
Make sure to replace the spline retaining ring.
Best regards,
Michael.

The offered repair price is equivalent to the vacation budget.
I'm doing everything myself now.
The seal I need for my car should be this one:
Quote: | VAICO Shaft Seal, Differential.
Article number: V10-3266
OEN 02M 301 189 G - VW
Installation side: front driveshaft to differential.
Thickness [mm]: 8
Inner diameter [mm]: 60
Weight [kg]: 0.024
Packaging height [cm]: 0.8
Supplementary information: Q+, Original Equipment Quality, MADE IN GERMANY.

Packing depth [cm]: 7.4

Or would it be better to replace the entire shaft? We don't want anything else to wear out besides the sealing ring. And we can get the retaining ring at the same time... Why are there so many different lengths of splined shafts?
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi,
Flange shafts (also known as splined shafts) are generally not prone to failure. It's just a bit tricky to (take them off) and find them again.
The retaining ring will develop burrs, so replace it with the sealing ring.

Hi.
I would advise against using Vaico products for these types of components; Corteco (Freudenberg) is a better choice.

Given the price, it's probably better to buy two or three extra in case one breaks during assembly.

Thank you for the information! Is "Original Equipment Quality MADE IN GERMANY" misleading? It also wasn't the cheapest option. I ordered two seals just to be on the safe side, and then I also ordered the complete stub axle with all the necessary hardware.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hello,
At approximately 100,000 km, the left drive shaft and the corresponding seal on the T6 transmission were replaced.
With now 141,000 km on the odometer, a workshop, while replacing the defective T6 shock absorbers at the front, discovered significant play in the left inner joint of the driveshaft.
According to their information, the splined shaft is okay and tight ( ), but the internal teeth of the driveshaft joint show significant wear. The inner joint/drive shaft needs to be replaced.
Too bad, I think it's a bit early, especially considering the vehicle's primary use for long-distance travel.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,
It's really bad that these problems have existed for decades and nothing is being done to change them.
The same problem has existed at Sharan & Co since as early as 2000.
