GRA Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Installation Error Code 00588

Hi,
I installed the GRA lever in our Polo today.
So far, everything has worked as expected (GRA is functioning) - but now the airbag light is on .

"One error found:"
00588 - Inflator for airbag (driver side) (N95)
33-00 - Resistance value too low.

I have.
- the battery disconnected.
- carefully detached the airbag.
- Unlocked and disconnected the connector to the slip ring using a small screwdriver.
- Airbag deployed.
- Steering wheel removed.
- Connector pulled from the steering column switch.
- Steering column switches and slip rings removed.
- Slip ring detached/disengaged.
- Slip ring clipped onto the new steering column switch.
- Cables laid.
- Steering column switches and slip ring installed.
- Reconnected the connector on the steering column switch.
- Steering wheel installed.
- Airbag cable connected to the slip ring.
- Airbag clipped in.

Does anyone have any idea what went wrong (or what I might have forgotten)?

Certainly, the resistance is too low, which means there's likely a short circuit somewhere between the two cables.

Okay, let's remove the airbag and see how the error "develops" or "progresses."
Eventually, there would have to be a point where the resistance becomes too great, or an interruption occurs.

That's also my suggestion. There is no interruption for the ECU; there are only options for resistance that is too low, too high, or okay.

"Make sure the plug isn't just slightly misaligned, preventing the short-circuit bridge from being fully engaged while still making contact. Otherwise, there's usually nothing else that could cause this."

They are located in each connector from the control unit to the igniter.

You are right .
This is very nicely described in the secondary literature (e.g., 152).

Okay, so the connector on the steering column switch could be pushed in another half a millimeter.
Remove errors
However, the light will only turn off again once the error in the control unit has been cleared.

If I may, I would like to add something.

I once encountered a similar error in a T4 vehicle, but in that case, it was due to a small coil breaking inside the connector for the airbag module. It appears there is some electronic circuitry within the small yellow airbag connector.

In this case, the error could only be fixed by replacing the coil spring, which is an expensive repair.
